Eagle's Wing Child Care and Education Programs is looking for our next Director! A successful candidate will display a passion for serving children and families through early childhood education best practices in a thriving international residential community. The ideal candidate has extensive, progressively responsible experience in early childhood teaching, administration, supervision, and/or leadership in a licensed and accredited early childhood education setting. They must demonstrate strong communication, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. A strong sense of self and the ability to appropriately infuse humor into the workplace is essential. The successful candidate possesses the ability to work in the fast-paced community setting of a large housing organization within a Research-I institution, as well as the ability to handle complex situations with sensitivity and objectivity. They must work well under pressure while responding to the changing needs of children, their families, and teaching staff.
About our Center:
Eagle's Wing Child Care and Education Programs (Eagle's Wing) is an early childhood education center dedicated to serving the children living in the University Apartments community, on the campus of University of Wisconsin-Madison. Eagle's Wing collaborates with university students, faculty, and staff to support outreach, research, and teaching. All Eagle's Wing programs are state licensed, hold national (NECPA) and city accreditation, and hold a 5-star rating with the Wisconsin YoungStar Child Care Rating program. The program is licensed through the state of Wisconsin to teach 107 children between the ages of six weeks through 12 years, including a contracted full-day 4K program through the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD). Eagle's Wing is known for a play-based approach, High Scope curriculum, and our multicultural, international community.
About our University Apartments department:
Under the general direction of the Director of University Apartments/Assistant Director of University Housing, the Director of Eagle's Wing provides the overall philosophical, policy, educational and program direction for Eagle's Wing Child Care and Education Programs, and serves as the primary contact for issues regarding children's education, care, and services for the University Apartments community. This position provides direct and indirect supervision for all full time and student staff at the center. In addition, the Director is responsible for the oversight and monitoring of the budget and financial processes for Eagle's Wing. This professional is a key member of the University Apartments Leadership team and works closely with the Resident Support Services team to be the primary resource for child development, wellness, and services. The Director works with other departments, colleges and universities, outside agencies, professional organizations and individuals to meet the goals of Eagle's Wing mission of service to UW-Madison students, faculty, and staff.
Responsibilities:
Directs the operations, budget development, curriculum, and teaching policy for one or multiple early childhood education facilities to ensure safety and compliance and foster an environment of learning and development. Serves as the key leadership contact to promote the objectives, mission, and goals of the early childhood education program.
• 30% Directs strategic planning initiatives and establishes unit objectives to ensure appropriate use of financial, administrative, staffing resources, and alignment with the strategic plan
• 20% Develops operating policies and procedures to comply with regulations, institutional policies, and unit objectives
• 20% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
• 10% Develops and audits the unit budget
• 10% Serves as the key leadership contact for internal and external stakeholders and promotes effective communication in a professional work environment
• 10% Serves as primary resource for child development, wellness, services, and for issues regarding children's education, care, and services in the University Apartments community
Tasks:
• Provides vision, direction, development, and oversight for a multicultural early childhood, 4K and school age education program, including overall philosophy, policies and procedures, and curriculum to maintain licensing and regulation standards.
• Advocates for high quality early childhood services for children, their families, and teaching staff.
• Evaluates ongoing changing resident demographics to meet the current needs of the University Apartments community.
• Evaluates requests for research projects, approving and/or participating as appropriate.
• Oversees customer service initiatives and resolves concerns.
• Oversees the placement of student teachers, interns, practicum students, observers, and volunteers.
• Fosters campus, community, and family partnerships, with various UW and community stakeholders, as well as state and local partner agencies.
• Trains the UA Leadership Team to ensure an understanding of the care and education needs of children and their families.
• Creates a high functioning team in Eagle's Wing. Empowers teams to achieve goals by providing resources, creatively solving problems, training responsibility, and authority. Encourage and promote decision-making and accountability at all levels.
• Assists with the formulation of priorities, policies, procedures, and evaluation process for University Apartments.
• Assists the Director of University Apartments in the planning, budgeting, and managing of University Apartments operations, including directing and strategically planning long-range goals for the Eagle's Wing program.
• Provides after-hours, weekend, and holiday on-call coverage for University Apartments.
• Serves on Incident Response Team for University Housing's Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP); Provides leadership and makes decisions regarding and during emergency management; Expected to provide after hours contact numbers.

Education:
Required
Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Educational Leadership or related field, with a minimum of 18 credits in Early Childhood Education.
Preferred
Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Educational Leadership or related field, with minimum of 18 credits in Early Childhood Education; or fifteen years of progressive experience in field.
Qualifications:
Required:
1. Seven or more years combined, progressively responsible experience in early childhood teaching, administration, leadership, and/or supervision in an early childhood education setting.
2. Experience with licensing and accreditation of an early childhood education program.
3. Experience with the High Scope or other play-based curriculum.
4. Qualifications to meet the minimum requirements for administrator or center director as prescribed by the State of Wisconsin Department of Children and Families, and/or license from the State of Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction with certification in PK-3 or PK-6.
Preferred:
1. Experience in a higher education campus-based early childhood education center.
2. Four years of supervision experience
3. Experience and training with Conscious Discipline and/or The Pyramid Model
4. Experience working with a diverse population, preferably in an international community.
5. Membership in an Early Childhood professional organization (Wisconsin Early Childhood Association, National Association for the Education of Young Children, National Coalition for Campus Children's Centers, etc.)
6. Experience with National Early Childhood Program Accreditation (NECPA) or other national accreditation program.

This is a full-time appointment. The starting annual salary is $84,240 or higher based on qualifications and includes a competitive retirement and benefits package.

Additional Information:
Primary schedule for this position is Monday-Friday, schedule may vary based on administration needs - coverage of all hours of center, 7:30am-5:30pm. This position provides after-hours, weekend, and holiday on-call coverage for the community on a rotating basis with other University Apartment supervisors.
A criminal background check will be conducted on finalist(s), as well as a Caregiver Background Check, including one-time fingerprinting. A TB test and health examination is required not more than 12 months prior to or 30 days after the first day of employment. A CPR certificate (including training in infant and child CPR, and training in AED) must be on file within 6 months of the first day of work. Training in Shaken Baby syndrome and in Mandated Reporting of Child Abuse are required.
