We are currently seeking an experienced Radiation Safety Officer for our Churchill Operations Site. The individual must possess broad knowledge and experience in all aspects of a comprehensive Radiation Safety Program to ensure the safety of employees, the general public, and the environment. The position is responsible for maintaining compliance with state and federal regulations. This position manages a complex radiation safety program and provides technical guidance with support from a staff of radiation protection technicians.
Your Day to Day:
• Steward the site’s Broad Scope Radioactive Materials Program, Accelerator Program, and Radiation Generating Device Program. As such, possess authority of executive management to monitor all activities that involve byproduct material and terminate any activity in which health and safety appear to be compromised without consulting with executive management or the Radiation Safety Committee (RSC).
• Perform preliminary reviews of proposed new uses and users of radioactive materials and formally discuss the proposal with the RSC for approval.
• Perform audits of all areas of use and individuals who are authorized to use byproduct material to ensure work is done in accordance with the license, regulations, and user permit conditions. Stewards the Emergency Response Program
• Steward the Environmental Monitoring Program as applicable
• Supervise the Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) team
• Assist with managing the non-ionizing radiation safety program
• Provides supervision, leadership, and direction to the radiation protection and environmental safety technicians
• Monitor and analyze key performance metrics to identify areas for improvement and implement changes as needed.
• Oversee and provide stewardship of the group's internal procedures and recordkeeping processes
Who You Are:
• Bachelor’s degree in physics, Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or closely related field
5+ years of related RSO or RPM experience preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Certification as a Radiation Safety Officer or significant progress towards formal training certification. NRRPT or CHP is desired.The candidate must be vetted Trustworthy and Reliable, in accordance with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, PA Department of Environmental Protection and the Churchill Site Access Authorization Program.
• The ideal candidate will have familiarization or experience working in a research laboratory setting with the presence of chemical, biological, or radiological hazards. Demonstrated experience communicating technical information to a wide range of audiences is necessary. This position is required to respond to emergencies involving radiological hazards as directed. The ability to pass illicit drug and alcohol screening is required. Required technical skills/knowledge includes:
• 10CFR Part 61 calculations and decisions
• 10CFR Part 37 experience
• Radiological Waste Shipping qualifications (49CFR including IATA)
• NESHAPS/RCRA/CERCLA experience
• Internal/external dosimetry experience (calculations and investigations)
• Special Nuclear Material/NMSS reporting
• Decommissioning
• American Nuclear Insurer experience (as an insured)
• Shielding design/calculations/application of shielding to reduce exposure
• X-ray/accelerator/RGD experience
