The role of the Outpatient RN CAP 1 is an entry-level professional nursing designation in the Clinical Advancement Program (CAP). The individual in this position will be accountable and responsible for providing and coordinating clinically competent care, which includes the assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation for a designated group of patients. It may also... involve delegating suitable duties to direct patient care staff such as RNs, LVN/LPNs, and Patient Care Technicians. As a member of the End Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD) healthcare team, this role involves participating in decision-making, training, leadership roles, and quality enhancement activities to improve patient care and facility operations.


Duties and responsibilities are expected to be executed in accordance with Fresenius Kidney Care policies, nursing practices standards, and state and federal regulations.

- Performing all essential functions under the direction of the Supervisor along with advice from the Clinical Educator, Preceptor, or collaborating with other Registered Nurses.
- Perform ongoing systematic collection and analysis of patient data before, during and after hemodialysis treatment for assigned patients. Document the findings, make necessary adjustments or changes to the treatment plan.
- Assess, collaborate and record patient/family's basic educational needs to provide initial and ongoing training to patients and their families.
- Direct and collaborate with direct and ancillary patient care staff for daily safe and effective delivery of hemodialysis therapy to assigned patients.
- Administer medications as prescribed or according to approved algorithms and document appropriately.
- Initiate or assist with emergency measures. Act as a resource for the healthcare team, participate in training, and assist in new staff orientation as required.
- Ensure correct lab collection, processing, and shipping procedures.
- Identify expected outcomes, keep records, and update the nursing assessment and patient care plan in collaboration with the Interdisciplinary Team.
- Ensure patient awareness regarding transplant and treatment options.
- Completion of CAP requirements for advancement is mandatory.
- Perform all other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

- The role involves direct patient care that frequently requires heavy lifting, patient repositioning, and assistance with ambulation. Equipment aids and/or coworkers may provide support.
- This position requires prolonged periods of standing, and the employee must be able to bend.
- Occasionally, the employee may be required to move equipment up to 200 lbs. with assistance and may have to lift chemical and water solutions of up to 30 lbs. as high as 5 feet.
- The work environment mimics that of a healthcare facility possessing moderated noise levels and climate control.


Oversees Patient Care Technicians/LPNs/LVNs/RNs as a Team Leader or an appointed Nurse in Charge when the following have been achieved:

- Successful completion of all FKC educational and modular training requirements for new hires.
- A minimum of 9 months of experience as an RN.
- A minimum of 3 months of experience as an RN in chronic/acute hemodialysis.


- Graduated from an accredited School of Nursing.
- Possess appropriate state licensure.
- Holds a current or has successfully completed CPR BLS Certification.
- Should meet the practice requirements in the given state.


- Entry level for RNs with less than a year of Nephrology Nursing experience in the past two years.
- Minimum of 9 months of experience as a Registered Nurse (preferred).
- Chronic/acute hemodialysis experience is a plus.
