Opportunities for high earnings through recruitment efforts:

Effective from January 8, 2024, Border Patrol Agents joining the workforce will be offered an extra benefit of $10,000 as recruitment incentives. This amount can be claimed by successfully completing their training and rendering service for three years, and those who take up hard to fill locations will be eligible for an added $10,000.

CBP is currently recruiting for ten full-time security positions that are open for immediate hiring.

GL-5 and GL-7 Wage and Salary Information

This is a career advancement opportunity with five different grade levels: GL-5, GL-7, GL-9, GS-11, and GS-12.

Salary for GL-9

Experienced Border Patrol Agents have an opportunity to move up the ranks if they complete the required training and pass the promotion exams. According to the requirements, agents can climb the career ladder through GL-9, GS-11, and GS-12. One important criterion for promotion is completing 52 weeks of work in the current grade level. In line with this requirement, agents can progress to the subsequent grade levels without having to re-apply again.

Duties and Responsibilities:

As a Border Patrol Agent, you will be required to take adequate measures to ensure the safety and security of the country. You will work in diverse locations and under different weather conditions, but will always have the support of fellow agents across the country.

Typical activities include:
• Undocumented noncitizens and noncitizen smugglers are a constant threat to national security, making the need for covert land border surveillance imperative.
• Acknowledging electronic sensory alarms; deciphering and complying with traces, imprints, and other visual proofs; utilizing infrared scopes while conducting nighttime missions.
• Responding to the appearance of aircraft and other measures to combat smuggling, including checking farms and ranches, monitoring traffic, patrolling urban areas, and running transportation inspections.
• With its sights all set on fulfilling its mission, the USBP carries out extensive patrols and surveillance exercises along the international border and coastal waterways, utilizing different Government assets such as off-road vehicles and horses.
• Occasional travels are subject to operational demands and might become necessary.

Duty Locations:

Qualifications:

If you want to be placed at the GL-7 grade level, you must fulfill one of the following criteria:

To be eligible for this position, you must have either a Bachelor's degree in criminology, law enforcement, police science, or a related field from an accredited college or university, or a comparable combination of education and experience

Alternative Education Qualification: The educational prerequisites for this post are met by possessing a bachelor's degree that displays remarkable academic accomplishments, either based on one's class position, a GPA that surpasses 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or membership in an honor society. Another way to satisfy the requirements is by showing that one will complete their bachelor's degree program with Superior Academic Achievement. In addition, applicants can satisfy the educational criteria by substituting a full year of graduate-level education from a recognized institution in a field related to law enforcement. Fields that can be studied include criminal justice, homeland security, justice studies, law enforcement, courts and judicial systems, forensic technology, forensic psychology, or corrections and rehabilitation. This training must be finished 9 months before the publication's closing date to be considered

Experience and Education Assessment: The assessment of a candidate's suitability for a job will consider both their prior work experience and education credentials. The application will include a resume as well as an official transcript to substantiate these claims.

The GL-9 grade level may be an option for those who have served in law enforcement or military law enforcement roles:

The minimum eligibility requirement for this position is a year of specialized work experience at a level comparable to the grade immediately below. This experience should exhibit your ability to enforce local, state, and/or federal laws and regulations in a law enforcement capacity and otherwise.

Substituting education is not possible at this level.

Other Requirements:

It is mandatory to be a citizen of the United States before seeking candidacy for this position.

To qualify for residency, you must have been living primarily in the United States (including protectorates recognized under international law) for at least three out of the previous five years.

The Border Patrol Agent position falls under the retirement provisions for law enforcement, which means that there is an age limit for applicants who wish to be referred for selection.

Veterans Preference: If you are eligible for Veterans Preference, you may also be qualified for an excepted service Veterans Recruitment Appointment (VRA), which does not have an age limit.

Field Training: Following the conclusion of your initial training at the U.S. Border Patrol Academy, you will engage in further instruction through field training. This practical training will entail several weeks of supervised on-the-job learning in actual border environments alongside seasoned Border Patrol agents
