The Center for Workforce Inclusion has an open position in the National Park Service’s (NPS) Experienced Services Program (ESP). The ESP program is designed to connect experienced workers, age 55 or older, with fulfilling and challenging opportunities at national parks and program offices that protect, conserve, and preserve our nation’s valuable natural, cultural, historical, and recreational... resources.

The Appalachian National Scenic Trail (ANST) is recruiting for a Boundary Surveyor Technician who will work as an assistant to a Lead Boundary Surveyor on a prioritized list of lands prepared by NPS staff. Work will primarily involve collecting physical boundary evidence, line posting, and as required, assisting with reestablishing missing or lost monuments and preparing draft plats or reports for review and approval by the lead surveyor. Preference will be given to applicants living in the Pennsylvania or New Jersey areas.

Role And Responsibilities

Duties include, but are not limited to:
• Field and office work to recover and collect physical boundary evidence.
• Install posts and boundary signs along federal boundary lines.
• Under the direction of the lead surveyor, reestablish lost corner monuments, or establish new monuments.
• Coordinate with the Appalachian Trail Park Office (APPA) and the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) to gather information for field survey work, and report findings.
• Prepare draft plats and reports.

Qualifications And Education Requirements

The successful candidate must be age 55 or older; possess an associate degree/certificate in a relevant field or certified as Land Surveyor Intern; must be an experienced land surveyor technician; have experience in doing field work surveying boundaries in rugged, mountainous terrain; be physically fit and able to navigate steep terrain with thick vegetation; be proficient with Trimble R12i GNSS system, and be proficient in software applications required to prepare reports, plats and process survey data (e.g., MS Office, AutoCAD, ArcGIS). Applicants possessing basic survey equipment are preferred but not required.

Hours & Compensation

Temporary position working an average of 24 hours per week @ $30.00 per hour.
