No two families or individuals are alike. In Slave Lake, WJS Canada's programs and services for children and families are adaptable to meet their specific needs. When families are in crisis, we work to engage and empower families to address the emotional, social, physical and general health aspects of their lives and help them create a support network that includes family, friends, organizations and professionals who can help families reach their goals.

In Your Role You Will
• Conduct family visits in the community and be available for evening/weekend visits and/or on standby as required.
• Attend supervised visits with families that are involved with the Ministry of Human Services.
• Establish trusting relationships with children and families, while assisting them in further developing skills in parenting, interpersonal, communication, activities of daily... living, etc.
• A key component of this position is supporting children and families to connect with resources and organizing ongoing service delivery with community systems (i.e. school), specialized service providers, volunteers and extended family members.
• Transport individuals or families as required (Ex. within Slave Lake or transport to Grande Prairie or Edmonton).
• Provide flexible and responsive client-centered supports while respecting their choices, cultural, social and religious heritage.
• Follow up on closed case files to ensure family safety and implementation of individual program plans.
• Administrative duties including typing/filing log notes, reports, compiling monthly stats, etc.

The Position

The Family Support Worker provides guidance to a caseload of 5-8 parents and families as they work through parenting courses and/or challenges such as income supports, mental health or addictions. The Family Support Worker will often provide transportation (in their own vehicle) of children, parents or families to appointments or supervised family visits.

This role will also be cross-trained in the competencies of other programs and roles within the first 6 months - including FASD supports, intervention, management supports, etc.

The position works regular office hours, as well as evening & weekend hours, up to 40 hr/week. Flexibility is required in order to support families during evenings & weekends when they are gathered together & require the most support.
• *Qualification requirements deem this to be Family Support Worker level 2.**

• ** Prior to confirmation of employment all applicants must provide a current (dated within 6 months of hiring date) Criminal Record Check and Ministry Check. These checks can take up to 6 weeks to obtain, please ensure you prepare accordingly.

As An Ideal Candidate You Possess
• SUITABLE FOR NEW GRADS with a Diploma or Bachelor of Social work, Counselling, Psychology, etc.
• Valid Driver’s License, reliable vehicle with appropriate insurance, and clean driver’s abstract

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
• Previous experience in social work/services field and supporting through families various challenges (addictions, mental health, domestic violence, suicide, etc.)
• Knowledge of indigenous culture is an asset.
• Knowledge and application of therapeutic and intervention theories and the stages of child development;
• Excellent verbal, written and listening communication skills and interpersonal skills in order to work effectively with individuals and groups from a variety of diverse communities and to resolve conflict in an effective manner;
• Strong understanding of the Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act.
• Training in suicide prevention and cultural sensitivity
