Job Purpose: We are the charity who look after, and bring to life, 2,000 miles of waterways across England and Wales because we believe that life is better by water. We are currently looking for a Hydrometric Assistant to join our national Water Management Team. The Water management team are responsible for supporting the Trust in all areas of water resource and flood risk management. Location & coverage This vacancy will be offered on a remote working basis, with a requirement to regularly attend our hub spaces as and when required for team working and meetings. It is therefore essential that applicants are able and willing to work effectively from home. Our hubs include: Leeds, Ellesmere Port, Burnley, Birmingham, Newark, Milton Keynes, Gloucester, London. Applicants would... ideally be accessible to Birmingham/Hatton for intermittent catch ups with the leadership team. This role will also involve regular travel to and along the reservoirs, canals and river navigations across the canal network. The regularity and distribution of travel will be discussed further at interview stage. Knowledge, Skills/Qualifications & Experience: Key Accountabilities : Under supervision of Principal and Senior Hydrologists you’ll be responsible for the quality assurance of flow and canal water level data. Assist Hydrologists in managing water resources e.g. water resources budgets, data reporting. Be prepared to work outside undertaking site visits and field trials in all weather conditions. Support flow gauging operationally as and when required. Effectively manage small scale water management projects, ensuring delivery to agreed time and budget. Recruit and manage volunteers to assist in meeting key deliverables. Take responsibility for the storage and management of the team’s field equipment. Work within the Trust’s policies and procedures including health & safety and environment and heritage issues. Knowledge, Experience & Skills Technical : Able to demonstrate some relevant knowledge (e.g. hydrometric principles, hydrological processes and models, relevant training, academic modules). Some experience of handling hydrometric and/or spatial data and information, beneficial. Some experience of site work and field data collection, beneficial. Aspiration to work towards Associate or Chartered Membership of a professional body e.g. CIWEM, desirable. We will help support your journey! General : Numerate, with confidence in processing and analysing data. Good level of written and spoken communication skills. Customer focused - aware of basic customer service standards and expectations. Able to manage own time effectively, prioritising tasks and seeking guidance where appropriate. Computer literate in MS Office. Valid driving licence appropriate for vehicle to be driven (expected).
