Job Title: Compliance Officer for Legal Practice (COLP)

Location: Camberley, Surrey, England & Wales

Department: Compliance

Reports to: CEO & General Counsel

Job Summary: We are seeking a diligent and experienced Solicitor/Compliance Officer for Legal Practice (COLP) to ensure our firm adheres to all legal and regulatory requirements as stipulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) and other relevant bodies. The COLP will play a critical role in maintaining the firm's ethical standards, managing risk, and fostering a culture of compliance throughout the organisation.

Key Responsibilities:

Regulatory Compliance:

Monitor and ensure the firm’s compliance with SRA regulations, including the SRA Code of Conduct and other relevant legal obligations.

Oversee the implementation and maintenance of effective compliance systems and controls.

Ensure all staff and consultants are aware of and adhere to compliance policies and procedures.

Risk Management:

Identify, assess, and... manage regulatory risks associated with the firm's activities.

Develop and implement strategies to mitigate identified risks.

Conduct regular compliance audits and risk assessments.

Reporting and Record Keeping:

Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of compliance activities.

Prepare and submit mandatory reports to the SRA and other regulatory bodies as required.

Report any material compliance issues or breaches to senior management and regulatory authorities in a timely manner.

Policy Development and Implementation:

Develop and review internal compliance policies and procedures to ensure they remain effective and up-to-date.

Provide guidance on the interpretation and application of compliance policies.

Ensure that all policies and procedures are effectively communicated to and understood by all staff.

Training and Education:

Organise and deliver compliance training sessions for all staff and consultants, including new hires.

Keep up-to-date with changes in relevant laws and regulations, and ensure the firm’s compliance practices reflect these changes.

Promote a culture of compliance and ethical behaviour within the firm.

Liaison and Communication:

Act as the primary point of contact for all regulatory and compliance-related inquiries.

Liaise with external bodies such as the SRA, Law Society, and other regulatory agencies.

Foster effective communication and collaboration between the compliance department and other departments within the firm.

Qualifications and Skills:
• **Qualified solicitor or legal professional*** with significant experience in regulatory compliance within the legal sector.

In-depth knowledge of SRA regulations, the SRA Code of Conduct, and other relevant legal frameworks.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage complex regulatory issues.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and educate staff at all levels.

High level of integrity and ethical judgement.

Proven ability to develop and implement effective compliance policies and procedures.

Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.

Experience and Training:

Minimum of 5 years of experience as a solicitor and experience in a compliance role would be beneficial.

Demonstrated experience in risk management, compliance auditing, and reporting would be advantageous.

Although experience as a COLP would be a distinct advantage we are willing offer training to the right candidate.
