Job Description...

We are looking for qualified scientific programmer and software engineer candidates to support NOAA’s Application and Science Common Services Support (ASCSS) in College Park, Maryland.Work is virtual so virtual/remote candidates are welcome to apply.

ASCSS specializes in transitioning science software from research to operations.Once operational, the software will process large amounts of input data from satellites and dozens of operational datasets maintained by NOAA, NASA, and other international weather agencies. The integration team within ASCSS must review algorithm software, ensure they meet coding and security standards, identify optimizations necessary for operations, and test that all necessary algorithm functionality is operationally ready. This requires our team to maintain a close relationship with researchers so that we understand the algorithm interfaces and are prepared to support all the necessary communication of data from the system into the algorithm.

Candidates expected to show the following knowledges, skills, abilities and/or experiences:

Transitioning scientific software applications from research to operations - Candidates will have software engineering experience. They will experience involving some aspect of scientific research in their graduate studies or work. They will have some experience with scientific data. They will have job and/or research experience working with scientists, preferably atmospheric science.

Bringing product algorithms up to operational standards - Candidates will have understanding of scientific and IT processes, software development lifecycle, quality control and assurance. Candidates will have experience with back-end application services, NOT front-end GUI/Web applications development.

Assisting scientists and science teams - Candidates will have understanding of scientific methods, the challenges faced by scientists, and the processes that scientists go through to develop environmental intelligence. For Candidates to assist scientists, they must understand the tools and processes that scientists go through.

Developing/Integrating software to support scientific applications - Prefer candidates who can demonstrate development experience using Fortran/C/C++ in a Linux environment. Candidate will be required to estimate algorithm complexity and level of effort needed in transition. Please note: Candidates will not develop new applications of algorithms. This is an integration activity.

Demonstrating familiarity with scientific data formats - Candidates will have experience in science field (as opposed to financial applications).Familiarity with NOAA and/or NASA data sets HIGHLY PREFERRED.

Successful candidates will have software engineering background and have familiarity with scientific data, preferably in a working collaboration with NASA and NOAA stakeholders, data scientists, domain scientists, etc.Candidates are expected to scientific processes.
