Are you looking to develop a career as an external affairs professional? Do you have good communication and organisational skills?

Our new External Affairs Teams will transform the way Environment and Business (E&B) engages across the Directorate, into the wider organisation, and with external stakeholders, government, partners, and the media.

The E&B Directorate supports the Environment Agency’s (EA’s) vision by creating and developing better ways to deliver environmental outcomes and improvements. Using evidence and innovation, our expert teams secure resources, influence policy and legislation, and enhance and support delivery of a better environment.

As an External Affairs Officer, you will be capable of co-ordinating and evaluating the work of the team, whilst leading your own strategic communications and engagement projects. You will be adaptable in supporting our leadership’s engagement priorities across the breadth of E&B’s work. This may mean working on... waste crime one week, and water quality the next. With strong written and verbal communication and engagement skills, an attention for detail, the ability to work with people at all levels, and an ability to work under pressure, you will help to promote the work of the Environment Agency to its target audiences; including the general public, key stakeholders and government.

The team

The E&B External Affairs team is responsible for advising and influencing our directorate on building and maintaining relationships with stakeholders and organisations; strengthening our voice and influence so that our work is better known, trusted, and has greater impact.

You’ll be part of a highly talented, multi-disciplinary team of 30. Based at various locations across the country, E&B external affairs will hold relationships with Defra, Government, our Executive Directors and internal technical and project teams.

Experience/skills Required

In your capability-based answers please demonstrate you:
• have a positive, proactive and hard-working attitude.
• have experience of helping to develop, deliver and evaluate communication and engagement plans.
• have experience of advising and influencing others on building and maintaining stakeholder relationships would be an advantage.
• are a highly organised, flexible person who can deliver quickly in a fast-paced environment.
• have strong communication skills and work well in a diverse, dispersed team.
• have experience of engaging and communicating with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
• have strong IT skills, especially Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
