Médecins Sans Frontières is a private, non-profit international humanitarian organization dedicated to providing medical assistance to populations in crisis, without discrimination and regardless of race, religion, creed or political affiliation. In Malawi, MSF works in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the local community in integrated HIV/AIDS in Chiradzulu District and Cervical Cancer projects Blantyre districts.

MSFF is looking for its Chiradzulu Office:

Type of contract : 6 months Fixed term contract

Start date : 19 April 2022

Main purpose of the position

Carry out all social-related activities, in order to ease the patient’s situation, to maximize his/her adherence to treatment and to improve his/her psychosocial condition.

Main responsibilities

Identify social needs of patients through a social assessment. Respond to the patient’s social needs, according to the scope of the project, by giving... direct social support (including transport, food, legal advice) and/or refer to other social actors, in order to actively contribute to the improvement of their quality of living.

Contact patients to follow up the evolution of their condition when needed (home visits, defaulter tracing)

Participate in the creation of any material needed for the activities of social workers. Take care of social services facilities, materials and equipment in order to ensure continuity.

Mapping and regularly updating a database of social partners, local authorities, other NGOs, and governmental social services in order to improve social services scope and responsiveness.

Keep records, statistic and files updated, reporting any social activity, in order to prioritize and develop appropriate programs or projects.

Receive and respond to referrals to the Complex Case Management Team and work collaboratively with the team and PSAM to provide the best possible care for patients identified as complex

Using the standard forms to record all contact with the patient, i.e. the initial social welfare assessment and all follow-up sessions

Maintaining patient files for each referred complex case

Maintaining a complex case database in collaboration with the Epi department.

Undertake tracing of patients which includes;

Prioritizing tracing requests received from the Medical Team

• Working collaboratively with the Lab Manager to trace patients with a high viral load

• Working collaboratively with HSA (Health system assistant Ministry of Health -MoH)

• Maintaining the tracing database on a weekly basis

• Balance tracing and complex case management workload to ensure priority is given to the most urgent cases.

• Work collaboratively with external factors including governmental and non-governmental organisations to establish referral pathways and mutually beneficial partnerships.

• Seek support from Village chiefs for any MSF activities in their villages, such as home visits, tracing, and patient support.

• Establish and maintain contacts with community-based groups and volunteers participating in HIV activities.

• Participate in creation of any material needed for the activities of information, education and communication.

• Participate in team meetings, multi-disciplinary case management meetings and group supervision to share experiences and discuss special cases with colleagues of the Medical & Patient Support Team.

• Assists with any other duties as deemed necessary by the PSAM.



: Degree in social work.








: Two years or more of experience in a similar social job;

: Experience with MSF or other NGOs is desirable.
