New opportunity not to be missed! A new and exciting opportunity has arisen for a Sole Gardener to help manage a beautiful and diverse country estate and to be part of a genuinely progressive organic farming business, attempting to address the challenges of biodiversity decline.

The Company

Carswell Estate is a family-owned organic dairy farm business with a mix landscape of pasture, woodland and hedgerows. The business also includes 8 holiday cottages and a wedding field all located on the cliffs with stunning views to the sea. Set over 1200 acres, based in a small corner of stunning South Devon countryside with the most beautiful scenery between Newton Ferrers and Holbeton in South Hams near Plymouth.

The Role

The successful candidate will be an experienced gardener with the ability to manage multiple country style gardens and to assist in the ongoing maintenance and further development of the grounds. This is a full-time permanent position for a knowledgeable... gardener aiming to put their professional and creative stamp on the gardens with longevity in mind.

The role will involve the management of the entire grounds & gardens; consisting of lawns, hedges, herbaceous borders, grazing paddocks and driveways. There is also an orchard, vegetable garden and ponds. Additionally maintaining walkways to our 2 private beaches and occasional coastal path maintenance.

We are proud to be an organic farm, so you must show a keen interest in sustainability and organic practices. We are interested in the implementation of innovative solutions for sustainable horticulture and habitat creation such as wildflower colonisation and wildlife corridors.

We are seeking a self-motivated, organised and experienced gardener to help maintain the gardens on a year-round basis. Applicants will need to possess extensive experience working in a similar role and be able to demonstrate plant knowledge and technical skills. Competency in pruning, weeding, grass cutting and hedge cutting will be necessary. You will also be experienced in using a range of horticultural equipment including strimmer, blower, hedges cutter, push mower, ride on mower and chainsaw.

An individual with a self-start attitude and proven track record of managing large gardens, with a strong work ethic, ability to work to their own initiative and willingness to work to consistently high standards are qualities which are essential for this role.

This is a physically demanding position which requires a fit and strong individual who is comfortable working in all weathers. This role is open to those who are currently working in a similar setting, as well as those who are looking for their next step up in their career and who feel they possess the skill and motivation to take on such a project.

General duties will include but are not limited to:
• Grass cutting with ride on and push mower and strimmer
• Boarder upkeep and improvement
• Hedge cutting
• Tree care, including chainsaw use and felling
• Maintenance of rights of way, drainage gullies, fencing
• Landscaping gardens that belong to the Estate’s properties and holiday cottages
• Repair and maintenance of machinery and tools
• Pond management
• Landscaping projects as and when required

Required Qualifications
• Recognised gardening qualification - ideally RHS Level 2/3 or NVQ Level 2 in Horticulture or similar
• Chainsaw Licence
• PA1 and PA6 Handheld Spraying
• Tractor Licence (desired)

About you
• Excellent interpersonal skills
• Good DIY abilities - experience in hard landscaping tasks including groundwork, paving, fencing and decking are advantageous
• Full clean driving licence
• Willingness to work independently and as part of the wider business team

The Benefits

In return, we will offer a generous package. Salary up to £28,000 depending on accommodation requirements and based on experience. 4 weeks holiday plus bank holidays with additional employee benefits. A 3 bedroom family home, close to the sea, can be included. The job is full time Monday to Friday with the option of seasonal hours based on an average of 40 hours per week. Our ideal start date is the beginning September 2024
