jobs description

This is an exciting opportunity for a qualified Clinical Psychologist with at least four years post-doctoral experience in neuropsychiatry, neuropsychology and/or services for older people. St Peter’s Hospital is a 51-bedded hospital based in Langstone, Newport. It caters for people with organic conditions, including dementia, Huntington’s disease, alcohol-related brain damage, and acquired brain injury. The people we support and treat often present with behavioural and psychological symptoms, including behaviours that challenge. We are looking for an experienced, innovative and values driven person to join our clinical team.

The successful candidate will work with the existing service lead to deliver and develop psychological input into St Peter’s Hospital. The service provides integrated care and treatment for people with complex neuropsychiatric conditions, typically with associated challenging behaviour. The postholder will work alongside a comprehensive multidisciplinary team... including Senior Nurses, Medics, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Speech and Language Therapists, a Dietician, and a Music Therapist. The post is supported by 3.0 WTE Assistant Psychologists and 1 WTE qualified clinical psychologist. You will have a key role in informing and providing effective, evidence-based care pathways within the service.

St Peters Hospital is increasingly recognised as a centre of excellence and best practice. The hospital has recently become an inaugural member of the new CCQI Neuropsychiatry quality network. We are rigorous in following professional, clinical and policy guidance in order to support high quality care. We take a person-centred perspective to all of our work and are committed to the current agenda around reducing restrictive practice and improving relationally focused care within mental health services, including services for people with neuropsychiatric needs. The successful candidate will provide clinical leadership, support, training and consultancy to our staff teams and inform service development.

Our organisation places a strong emphasis and value on psychologically-informed services and will invest in your ongoing development. You will be part of a large clinical services department across our group with access to clinical and forensic psychologist and AHP colleagues. Research and networking interests are supported and encouraged. We have good links with local clinical training courses and academic centres: the postholder will be encouraged to supervise trainee clinical psychologists on placement.

We are particularly interested in hearing from people who meet BPS requirements for appointment to a consultant grade position but are also keen to hear from people who are looking for a developmental opportunity to progress in their careers, where additional support will be provided on the developmental pathway. There are opportunities to access specialist training in Neuropsychology. You may already hold approved clinician status. Applicants without such status can be supported and encouraged to work towards portfolio submission to support an application to register as an approved clinician if that is an area of development interest.

We are open to flexible working and negotiable hours. For more information about the role, please contact Dr Andrew Hider – [email protected] or [email protected]
