The Northern Midlands Council are seeking applications from suitably qualified and experienced people to join the Northern Midlands Council team as an Environment Health Officer. Reporting to the General Manager, this is a stand-alone full function EHO role, and will be offered on a full-time basis at our offices in Longford, Tasmania.

Based in a regional area, the varied types of work you will be doing will expand your skills and experience and see you working on everything from public... private and recreational waters (including cooling towers), to a wide variety of nuisance complaints, as well as the typical EHO compliance matters such as food safety and public health regulated premises.

About the role

Reporting directly to the General Manager, this full function EHO role will see you responsible for delivering statutory environmental and public health programs and compliance activities across the municipality. As you will be primarily working on your own, you will use your exceptional negotiating, mediation, and conflict resolution skills to ensure all compliance matters are dealt with in a timely and efficient manner. You will be responsible for:
• Investigating and responding to a broad range of public health concerns and environmental complaints
• Food safety inspections, education, guidance and enforcement actions
• Providing expert advice and information to Council and management on all aspects of public health matters
• Engaging with the Council members, council staff, and community on a range of EHO related matters
• Reviewing and maintaining a robust compliance system to ensure ongoing compliance in all environmental and public health matters
• Liaising with external EHO contractors responsible for sewerage and waste water matters

About you

You will be a self-motivated individual, with a passionate and pro-active approach to your work. You are great at working with people to achieve positive outcomes through education and support, whilst also capable of handling difficult situations with a professional and calm manner if required. You show initiative, have great problem-solving skills, and have excellent communication skills (both verbal and written).

Your application should include a cover letter, no longer than 2 pages, addressing the following selection criteria:
• Hold a tertiary qualification in Environment Health or equivalent
• Have 2 or more years as an EHO
• Have proven experience in Environmental Health inspection and enforcement activities
• Have proven ability to be organised and manage priorities
• Have sound knowledge and understanding of local government operations
• Have experience working in a highly scrutinised and regulated framework
• Proven capabilities using computer systems for compliance, record keeping, communications, and reporting
• Hold a current driver’s licence.

Terms and conditions of employment, including salary will be negotiated with the successful applicant and in accordance with the Northern Midlands Council Enterprise Agreement.
