The Strategic Marketing and Communications Team in the Office of VP Research is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Manager.

Reporting to the Director, Strategic Marketing and Communications (VPR), the Manager will work closely with the Vice-President (Research), the Associate Vice-Presidents (Research), departments and institutes within the VPR portfolio, and stakeholders across campus to implement the VPR’s priorities.

The Manager provides leadership for the marketing and communications team within the VPR, and provides guidance to communicators in VPR-related units and across campus. The role is responsible to lead the development and implementation of the communications, marketing, and digital strategies for institutional strategic initiatives driven by the VPR, continually evaluating and refining a portfolio of communications and marketing vehicles to ensure alignment with institutional priorities.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are... not limited to):

Strategic Planning, Program Development, Project Management
• Work closely with the executive leadership team, advising on, contributing to, and reporting on activities to meet institutional and VPR objectives.
• Provide strategic leadership on projects and initiatives related to the VP Research priorities.
• Effectively advocate for and nurture strong alliances between the Research portfolio and partners from across campus and in the community.
• Lead cross-functional teams or projects with moderate resource requirements, risk and/or complexity.
• Leads strategic initiatives; includes developing programming and engagement initiatives to serve institutional goals and objectives.
• Maintains budget, provides financial oversight on projects and initiatives.
• Leads others to solve complex problems, including interpersonal, technical, political and bureaucratic challenges.

Marketing and Communications
• Leads and implements a broad range of internal and external communications strategies, projects, initiatives and publications.
• Creates depth in UCalgary’s science communication, storytelling content and institutional narrative.
• Identifies and maximizes opportunities to promote significant research outcomes and develop global visibility of our research and innovation experts.
• Leads development and implementation of high-quality and timely marketing and communications plans and content.
• Engages with campus community members through a variety of channels to increase awareness of new opportunities and initiatives, delivering persuasive presentations to researchers and other stakeholders to generate active engagement, and ensuring that activities align with VP Research priorities.
• Provides effective communications support and counsel to executive leadership team on sensitive or complex issues.
• Engages key stakeholders in the work, results and successes of research initiatives.

Staff Management
• Leadership and management of 1-2 senior and intermediate positions in multiple phases of development, including hiring, delegation of work, mentorship and training, and performance management.
• Works with the Director, Strategic Marketing and Communications to prioritize and manage staffing resources to maintain a high level of service.
• Proactively oversees operations, coordination and communications for complex and comprehensive issues related to the VPR portfolio, including managing expectations of a variety of stakeholders and enabling effective cross-unit collaboration to achieve target outcomes.
• Manages complex research issues and challenging interpersonal interactions with composure and diplomacy.
• Maintains trustworthy, productive, problem-solving working relationships with external colleagues and partners .

Qualifications / Requirements:
• A post-secondary degree in business, marketing, communications or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
• Minimum of 8-10 years of experience working with executive leadership and leading teams in project management, marketing and communications.
• Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, motivate, train and coach others.
• Demonstrated excellence in project management, requirements gathering, strategic collaboration, and negotiation, with strong analytical abilities and strategic thinking in contributing to the design and implementation of initiatives and programs.
• Requires an in-depth knowledge of the strategic direction and priorities of the organization; understands and works effectively within university context, structure, governance and decision-making processes, and operations.
• Knowledge and expertise in formulating competitive strategies and practices; understands industry trends and recommends best practices to improve processes.
• Experience with web and software development, user testing and user experience design, marketing strategy, writing, editing, creative ideation, event planning, public relations, media and community outreach.
• Strong interpersonal skills and a proven ability to build and maintain effective relationships.
• Ability to speak and write clearly and succinctly in a variety of settings and styles; ability to distill complex information, listen effectively and to deliver messages that have the desired impact.
• Working knowledge of various technologies, including web, email marketing platforms, event.
• Management tools, graphic design software, video production, and ability to learn new technologies and train staff as appropriate.
