About the Job...

THIS POSITION IS TEMPORARY, ON-CALL AND SEASONAL BETWEEN APRIL AND OCTOBER.

Duties and responsibilities involve performing a variety of maintenance, repair and cleaning aboard the research vessel, assisting in the launch and retrieval of over-the-side scientific equipment, rigging and ensuring safe usage of deck and over-the-side apparatus, operating winches, assisting in watch standing, doing engine-room walk-through, housekeeping, and other duties as assigned.

The Employer retains the right to change or assign other duties to this position.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Must have or be in the process of obtaining maritime certification: Ordinary Seaman or Able-bodied Certificates or 50 ton master/mate license. The license you have must be listed on the application. Must be physically capable of performing the duties of the position. Must be willing to be part of a drug testing program and be willing and able to get a TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential) card.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience planning and preparing meals for large groups of approximately 10 people. Must possess communication and interpersonal skills, and be able to live and work with others in a tight working/living environment. Must be able to be away from home for periods of up to 3 weeks. Must reside within a reasonable distance from the Duluth-Superior area. Must possess a positive, customer-oriented attitude, be responsible and well organized, and display attention to personal grooming and hygiene.

About the Department

The Large Lakes Observatory is part of the Swenson College of Science and Engineering at the University of Minnesota, Duluth Campus. The R/V Blue Heron is the largest university-owned research vessel in the Great Lakes and is part of the University National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS) - an organization of academic institutions and national laboratories involved in oceanographic research. The R/V Blue Heron is available for use by research scientists on any of the Great Lakes for limnological, geophysical, geochemical, meteorological and other research.
