Job Summary

This is work in performing assigned duties in the controlling and extinguishing of fires. Duties are preformed, when fighting a fire, under specific orders and directions but, the work requires an understanding of modern firefighting techniques. This classification is considered a trainee position. This classification has no supervisory responsibilities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Duties include but are not limited to:
• Participates in in-service training activities, physical fitness exercises, drills and demonstrations to learn fire service skills.
• Learns to: respond to fire alarms; connect and lay hose lines; enter burning buildings with hose lines; operate nozzles; place streams of water on fires as directs; ventilate buildings; and perform salvage operations.
• Cleans firefighting equipment; oils and cleans fire trucks. Washes and cleans fire hoses; and assists in the maintenance of general cleanliness in and about a fire station.
• Performs custodial and grounds maintenance work on assigned shift at designated fire station.
• Inspects and maintains fire hydrants; duties include checking and measuring water flow and static pressure; clears area around hydrant for easy access; lubricates and paints hydrants as needed.
• Conducts territory tours to become familiar with residential and commercial areas, new developments, streets and intersections, etc.
• Attends classes to achieve certification as a certified firefighter.
• Responding to various types of emergencies such as fires, accidents, medical emergencies, hazardous materials incidents, and natural catastrophes; driving emergency medical vehicles to the scene of an emergency
• Administering aid to injured or sick persons; checking vital signs and providing hospital personnel with information concerning the nature of the emergency and the steps necessary to provide immediate medical assistance
• Operating medical equipment and administering medication to injured or sick persons on-site and in-transit to appropriate medical facility as authorized
• Transporting injured or sick persons to appropriate medical facility
• Ability to perform exterior support functions on fireground including rehabilitation sector
• Inspecting, testing, cleaning, and maintaining station equipment and vehicles; reporting safety hazards or maintenance problems to the Station Officer or Captain
• Maintaining an adequate inventory supply aboard emergency medical vehicles through regular checks
• Preparing, completing, maintaining, and submitting reports pertaining to shift activities
• Participating in in-service training programs, certification classes, and drills as required
• Attending classes to maintain certification(s)
• Performing general cleaning and maintenance of shift station
• All responsibilities may not be performed by all incumbents
• Performing other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

MINIMUM EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
• High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
• Any equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable.
• Firefighter Professional Qualification published by the National Fire Protection Association (Firefighter I, Firefighter II).

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
• Must be eighteen (18) years of age or older.
• Must have no felony convictions within the past ten (10) years.
• Must have the ability to pass a physical examination
• Must have the ability to pass the minimum physical fitness requirements as set forth by Firefighter Professional Qualification published by the National Fire Protection Association (Firefighter I, Firefighter II).
• Certification as Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or higher by the Georgia Department of Public Health.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
• Must have and maintain a valid United States driver’s license (Georgia Class F or equivalent), a satisfactory motor vehicle record (MVR) and the ability and willingness to drive a county vehicle; if assigned job duties require the use of a vehicle
• Certification as an EMT, AEMT-Advanced, OR Paramedic by the Georgia Department of Public Health; maintain certification
• Certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR); maintain certification
• Certification in Advanced Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (ACLS) per license level

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
• Knowledge of the principles and practices of firefighting, fire ground safety, hydraulics emergency response, rope and rescue operations.
• Knowledge of state traffic laws for emergency vehicles.
• Knowledge of all fire suppression and emergency response equipment and its placement on vehicles.
• Knowledge of basic life support and CPR.
• Knowledge of or ability to learn assigned territory including major commercial and public buildings, major residential areas, streets, fire hydrants locations and alarm boxes.
• Ability to react quickly and calmly while under pressure in emergency situations.
• Ability to understand and follow detailed oral and written instructions.
• Ability to communicate and interact effectively with co-workers, other county employees and the general public.
• Ability to establish facts and to draw valid conclusions.
• Ability to achieve valid certification as a Certified Firefighter within twelve (12) months of employment.
• Skill in performing rope rescue utilizing rappelling abilities.
• Skill in using hurst tools to extricate victims from damaged vehicles.

Ability to retain valid certification as a Certified Firefighter on an annual basis.
