General contractor focused on residential & commercial highrise buildings projects across Canada

Our client, a leading general contractor of mixed-use, residential and commercial highrise and special projects is looking to bring an Estimator and Senior Estimator on board to support and streamline the costing process on the growing pipeline of projects, from masterplan wood-frame communities to high-rise luxury towers and almost everything in between. Location is flexible, Vancouver, Toronto or Calgary

The estimating team plays a key role in preconstruction by analyzing and aligning trade budgets with project requirements, and effectively communicating project estimate details to clients/owners, architects and other project stakeholders.
• Use knowledge of construction methods to determine the most cost-effective approach;
• Review designs to identify... opportunities for cost savings;
• Coordinate and assemble estimating input and quantities;
• Prepare preliminary construction schedules, including major activities and phasing;
• Conceptual estimating from preliminary drawings through final cost analysis;
• Communicate with subtrades to assist in budgeting to ensure they understand their scope of work;
• Review bid packages from sub-contractors and suppliers;
• Assist in monitoring escalation trends;
• Attend design meetings with Owner and Consultants as necessary.
• Assemble all estimating input including labour, material, equipment and trade pricing with the support of a larger team;
• Prepare and analyze labour needs and breakdowns to assist with budgets and planning;
• Review designs to identify areas of improvement and opportunity for cost efficiencies;
• Complete project scope of work reviews to ensure completeness of estimates, and all technical specifications, subcontractor scopes, and general condition items have been quantified and costed;
• Build strong relationships and long-term partnership opportunities with our trades and suppliers;
• Conceptual estimating from preliminary drawings through final cost analysis;
• Track estimated versus actual costs over the life of the project;
• Contribute to design and preconstruction meetings with owners and consultants;
• Support our leadership in the training and development of emerging talent on the team.

Ideal Candidate:

The ideal candidate is someone who has been an estimator, cost consultant, or quantity surveyor and you’re looking to leverage your experience with an established general contractor that takes a relationship-based approach to winning new projects. You are detail oriented, highly analytical, and numbers-driven. Requirements and Qualifications (Estimator)
• At least two to four (2-4) years of recommended solid construction estimating, cost consulting, or quantity surveying experience;
• Experience in estimating, preconstruction or project management of mid to large scale projects – high rise construction will be considered an asset;
• Excellent and sophisticated communication and relationship-building skills – ability to communicate effectively to potential clients, the team, and trade partners;
• Experience in or ability to write proposals and RFP responses with ease;
• Ability to identify areas of opportunity and growth.

Requirements and Qualifications (Senior Estimator)
• At least six to eight (6-8) solid years of experience working on complex projects from beginning to end;
• Proven experience as a lead estimator on a minimum of 1-2 projects;
• Knowledge of trade practices, market conditions, and building materials;
• Experience and comfortable working with a computerized measurement software system;
• Certificate, diploma, or degree in Building Technology, Construction Management, Construction Technology, or a related field;
• Strong leadership skills – with the ability to manage difficult conversations effectively and deal with challenging situations with ease;
• Ability to communicate confidently and effectively with all levels of employees and owners, architects, and subtrades.
