Lateral Entry Pay Structure:
The starting salary of certified firefighter/paramedics is based upon the verifiable previous experience level of the applicant as a full-time firefighter/paramedic without a lapse in service. Experience as a firefighter/EMT or volunteer firefighter/paramedic is not accepted.

Paramedic Recruit:
Attend and satisfactorily complete or if currently enrolled, successfully complete an approved Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) basic fire academy. Acquire a TCFP Basic Firefighter certification by taking and passing the TCFP certification exam.

Firefighter/Paramedic:
Provides basic and/or advanced life support and fire fighting work in the treatment of the sick or injured and fire fighting duties in preventing, combating, and extinguishing fires along with water and other rescue related duties.Paramedic Recruit:
• If not currently enrolled in a Texas Commission on Fire Protection approved training program, the Paramedic Recruit will attend a TCFP accredited fire academy when such training program is made available by the department. The local training facility must be approved by the Fire Chief.
• If currently enrolled in a Texas Commission on Fire Protection approved training program, the Paramedic Recruit will successfully complete the program.
• The Paramedic Recruit will adhere to the rules and regulations of the Grapevine Fire Department, City of Grapevine, and the training facility.
• Any time spent between the date of hire and the beginning of the TCFP program or during breaks in the program will be spent on internal policy and procedure training, paramedic orientation, and any other duties as scheduled and assigned by the Grapevine Fire Department.
• Performs related duties as directed when such duties are a logical and appropriate assignment to the position.
• Regular and timely attendance are required for this position.
• Interacts professionally and respectfully with the public, coworkers and others in the course of daily work.
Firefighter/Paramedic
• Provides fire fighting, rescue, first aid and basic and/or advanced life support at emergency scenes.
• Assists in the removal of victims from dangerous situations.
• Prepares complete records and reports related to fire, emergency medical care and vehicle operations provided during operational periods.
• Participates in the exchange of information between off-going and on-coming shifts and in crew meetings as necessary.
• Checks all personal gear, assigned vehicles, equipment and tools to ensure safe and effective operation.
• Responds to alarms of fire or other emergencies; lays, connects and uses hose and nozzles to direct fog or water stream. Raises and climbs ladders, uses fire extinguishers, bars, hooks, lines, pike poles, halligans, drills, saws, extrication tools and appliances, and other equipment safely, efficiently, and in accordance with established policies and procedures.
• Operates engines, trucks, ambulances, and rescue units safely, efficiently, and in accordance with established policies and procedures.
• Maintains familiarity with box maps and related road networks within the fire district area and within those areas with Automatic Aid Response Agreements.
• Participates in all scheduled and assigned training classes.
• Communicates among assigned personnel, other employees throughout the city, upper management and the general public as necessitated by the position.
• Performs related duties as directed when such duties are a logical and appropriate assignment to the position.
• Regular and timely attendance are required for this position.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Paramedic Recruit:
• Must have the ability to follow both written and verbal instruction.
• Must have the ability to complete tasks as assigned.
• Ability to work in a team environment, contribute as a team member and treat co-workers and customers with respect.
• Ability to work any day of the week (weekends and weekdays) and long hours.

Firefighter/Paramedic
• Must respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service.
• Works in emergency conditions that may involve extreme danger and exertion under hazardous conditions, including but not limited to flames, smoke, hazardous materials, cramped conditions, charged or oxygen-deficient atmospheres, downed power lines, victims with severe injuries/death, and inclement weather.
• Must be able to wear all assigned bunker gear and perform related emergency scene duties effectively and efficiently.
• Must be able to frequently lift and carry heavy weights, climb, walk, run, drive vehicles, crawl, stoop, push, pull, jump, grasp hoses, grasp and manipulate small objects, work on unsteady footing, and use other emergency and firefighting equipment as required.
• Must possess the ability to use basic swimming techniques for water rescues and must possess good vision and hearing and be able to distinguish colors and odors.
• Knowledge of the procedures and methods used in safely and comfortably handling/treating patients.
• Knowledge of pre-hospital patient care for basic life support.
• Knowledge of fire suppression and prevention methods, procedures, and techniques.
• Ability to learn and efficiently operate firefighting equipment.
• Ability to communicate both orally and in writing, ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with employees and management.
• Ability to think clearly and use independent judgment in routine and non-routine situations which may occur.
• Good physical condition and the ability to perform job functions.
• Ability to be punctual and attend work regularly.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Paramedic Recruit:

The Paramedic Recruit must pass all written and physical tests in order to satisfactorily complete the course.

The Paramedic Recruit must attend all courses related to the TCFP program. Any absence from the course must be approved by the Division Chief of Professional Development Training or the Assistant Chief of Operations. Total absences must not exceed 5% of the required attendance.

The Paramedic recruit must pass the Texas Commission on Fire Protection Basic Firefighter exam.

Minimum age 18. High school diploma or equivalent.

Must be certified as an Emergency Medical Technician EMT-Paramedic or Licensed Paramedic issued by the Texas Department of State Health Service at time of hire. An individual who has a National Registry certification for Paramedic is eligible to apply for employment but must apply for Texas certification and must be an EMT-Paramedic or Licensed Paramedic certified by the Texas Department of State Health Services at time of hire. The Texas Department of State Health Services certification shall be maintained during employment. The Paramedic Recruit must successfully pass any department/division required written or oral examinations prior to employment and meet Texas Department of State Health Services and Medical Directors requirements for re-certification during employment.

If hired and currently enrolled in a Texas Commission on Fire Protection certified training program, the Paramedic Recruit must successfully complete the program. Upon completing the TCFP training program, the Paramedic Recruit will be given two chances within 60 days of the completion of the program to successfully pass the TCFP Basic Firefighter Certification exam. Upon successful completion of the TCFP Basic Firefighter certification exam, the Paramedic Recruit must obtain Texas Commission on Fire Protection Basic Firefighter certification and shall maintain this certification during employment. Unsuccessful completion of the TCFP certification exam or failure to obtain Texas Commission on Fire Protection Basic Firefighter certification will result in termination.

Paramedic Recruits hired and sent to a TCFP training program by the Grapevine Fire Department must successfully complete the program. Upon completing TCFP training program, the Paramedic Recruit will be given two chances to successfully pass the TCFP Basic Firefighter Certification exam within 60 days of completion date of TCFP training program. Upon successful completion of the TCFP Basic Firefighter certification exam Paramedic Recruit must obtain Texas Commission on Fire Protection Basic Firefighter certification and shall maintain this certification during employment. Unsuccessful completion of the TCFP certification exam or failure to obtain Texas Commission on Fire Protection Basic Firefighter certification will result in termination.

Must pass a Fire Department background check, pre-employment credit check, Federal/National criminal background check, physical agility test, polygraph exam and at time of hire must have a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record as defined by City policy.

Must have or obtain within three months (90 days) of successful completion of the TCFP training program a valid Texas Class “B” or higher driver’s license with an acceptable driving record as defined by City of Grapevine policy.

Due to Criminal Justice Information Security (CJIS) requirements, the candidate must never have been convicted, put on court-ordered community supervision, or probation for any criminal offense above the grade of Class B misdemeanor or a Class B misdemeanor within the last ten years from the date of the court order. Class A Misdemeanor Conviction, Deferred Adjudication or Felony Conviction are permanent disqualifiers. Conviction for family violence or deferred adjudication for family violence are permanent disqualifiers.

Must pass all required pre-employment testing to include, but not limited to a basic physical, functional assessment screening (Level 2), drug screen, Ishihara vision screening, Titmus vision screening and all other required Fire Department medical screenings.

Must be in compliance with the department’s drug and tattoo policy. No tattoos are permitted on the head, neck, or hands of any sworn personnel with the exception of a ring tattoo designating marriage.

Firefighter/Paramedic
Minimum age 18. Requires high school diploma or equivalent.

Must be certified and maintain a current Basic Structural Firefighter (minimum) certification issued by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection at the time of hire. Shall successfully pass Firefighter, EMT Paramedic, or Licensed Paramedic department/division required written or oral examinations prior to employment and meet Texas Commission on Fire Protection, Texas Department of State Health Services, and Medical Directors requirements for certification during employment.

Must be certified as an Emergency Medical Technician EMT Paramedic or Licensed Paramedic issued by the Texas Department of State Health Services at the time of hire.

Basic Structural Firefighter (minimum) certification issued by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection and a certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Paramedic or Licensed Paramedic certification issued by the Texas Department of State Health Services must be maintained during employment.

Must possess the ability to use basic swimming techniques for water rescues. Must possess good vision and hearing and be able to distinguish colors and odors.

Must pass a credit check, Federal/National criminal background check, full Fire Department background investigation, physical agility, and polygraph test.

Must have a valid Texas Class “B” or higher driver’s license with an acceptable driving record as defined by City policy.

An individual who has a National Registry certification for Paramedic is eligible to apply for employment but must apply for Texas certification and be Paramedic certified by the Texas Department of State Health Services at the time of hire. The Texas Department of State Health Services certification shall be maintained during employment.
