Job Description

This is an exciting opportunity for two experienced and motivated Senior Project Managers to join the Waste Regulatory Reforms Programme. These are temporary roles until the end of March 2025 however there is the possibility of extension, subject to funding.

Defra’s Resources and Waste Strategy identified a number of reforms to waste regulation to help us drive towards a circular economy. Implementing this portfolio of legislative reforms is a ‘once in a generation’ opportunity to make a seismic shift in the way waste and resources is managed in this country.

You will:
• Lead project management/support programme management
• establish best practice
• Identify success criteria
• Monitor, control and report on progress
• Manage dependencies of varying complexity
• Identify blockers and manage risks
• Help provide leadership in a programme which works at pace and is successful
• Work in an inclusive and integral way within the Programme

Due to the nature of project... management, the roles will align to different areas of work as we progress through the programme however initially we require one project embedded project manager and one to work in our programme space, leading on interdependency management.

The Environment Agency are fully committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We don’t just talk about diversity; we seek it, embrace it, and live it, for the benefit of our staff, our communities, and our environment.

Everyone that joins us is required to undertake training and participate in incident response duties when the need to respond arises. Having an incident role is an essential part of working for the Environment Agency and an active way to support communities and prevent harm to the environment. Further information on incident response can be found within your candidate pack.

The team

The posts are in the Waste Regulatory Reform Programme Management Office, in the Environment and Business directorate. We promote a positive, inclusive, and supportive culture where everyone feels valued. We use evidence, expertise, and innovation to enhance and support delivery, influence policy, legislation and secure resources.

We are a dispersed team, supporting 13 projects to deliver regulatory reform. You will work closely with our Programme Manager, Project Technical Leads and Project Support Officers.

Experience/skills Required

We are looking for people with strong project management experience. Holding a Programme or Project qualification would be an advantage but is not essential and will form part of your development plan. However, it’s your energy, communication and the way you motivate people that will set you apart. You’ll build effective relationships and encourage good project management discipline working as part of a larger, multidisciplinary project team. This will involve influencing and encouraging delivery from colleagues across multiple departments.

In your capability-based answers please demonstrate your ability to work effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures and actively encourage others to consider diversity issues in their work.

You’ll have a range of development opportunities and appropriate training will be provided.
