To work at the Paineira Group of the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS)

Sirius is one of the brightest synchrotron light sources in the world in its energy range. It is an open facility of the LNLS (Laboratório Nacional de Luz Síncrotron), part of the Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM). The Sirius beamlines count on advanced technologies in various engineering fields and synchrotron light techniques.
Based on the X-ray Diffraction (XRD) technique, Paineira is a dedicated beamline for the structural characterization of polycrystalline samples, operating primarily in the Debye-Scherrer (capillary geometry) and reflection geometry (Bragg-Brentano). The beamline is in the final stage of instrumental commissioning and starting scientific commissioning. Beyond the high-quality X-ray diffraction analysis, the beamline aims at various sample environments to provide in situ and operando XRD studies in diverse scientific areas, such as catalysis, storage... energy materials, cement and ceramics, and soil science. In addition, the energy range associated with the wide angular detection allows for reaching Q-vector modules from 20 to 29Å-1. Thus, PDF analysis might be available at the beamline as a secondary and complementary characterization technique.

Main Activities

Participating in the instrumental and scientific commissioning of the XRD experiments at the beamline;
Developing and commissioning sample environments and cells for in situ and operando XRD experiments in diverse scientific areas;
Developing sample preparation procedures for XRD, eventually making them compatible with other related diffraction and spectroscopy techniques;
Developing strategies for collecting and processing XRD data;
Implementing specific techniques and procedures for conducting PDF experiments, exploring the beamline high energy X-ray beam and the high angular variation of the diffracted beam detection;
Conduct scientific research within one of the strategic areas of LNLS/CNPEM;
Support the Sirius/LNLS user program.

Required Qualifications

Hold a doctorate (Ph.D.) in physics, chemistry, materials engineering, physics engineering, chemical engineering, or a related discipline.
Have a background in synchrotron light techniques and at least experience in a synchrotron facility as a post-doctoral fellow or equivalent.
Demonstrate skills with synchrotron instrumentation, sample environment development, programming, and data analysis.
Have fluency in English.
Ability to work within a multidisciplinary group and perform varied tasks.
Be flexible to change from synchrotron scattering, absorption, or X-ray imaging techniques and work with supporting methods and laboratories, according to the LNLS management demand.


Experience using synchrotron light;
Background in X-ray scattering (diffraction and total scattering), X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and X-ray imaging techniques;
Knowledge in powder diffraction and PDF data processing;
Instrumentation training, having developed and employed innovative experimental arrangements and cells for in situ and operando studies.
