This scientist will provide technical and project leadership across carbohydrate platforms by leading and participating on cross-functional teams to develop new ingredients and systems and steer them to commercialization! The role will add value to ingredients by providing a detailed understanding of the chemistry, characterization, and functionality of starch ingredients and... complexes; additionally, this role will identify, study, and recognize ingredient interactions on a molecular level to direct the optimization of texture and other properties. This position will support customers through an in-depth understanding of functionality of starch ingredients and spur advancements of starches in the broader food industry; drive knowledge of the structure-function relationship of starch ingredients in food systems to propel product innovation while maximizing functionality of existing ingredients; utilize connections and collaboration with suppliers, relevant trade associations, universities, and research facilities to keep up with new developments, methods, and innovations related to starches; and promote ADM customers and external partners as a leader in texture science and research through training programs. This role is recognized as a high-level scientific resource and must have demonstrated ability to develop and champion independent ideas leading to successful project completion. Job Responsibilities Drive projects by providing project leadership and direction in both applied science and new product development. Provide thought leadership on projects within and outside of area of responsibility. Ensure instrumental characterization and structure function understanding are used appropriately. Work interactively with other groups, including process development, applications, and business groups. Use carbohydrate science expertise to proactively develop and progress ideas for new product innovations to drive future business growth through new product development and understanding customer application. Design experiments to promote the understanding of carbohydrate ingredients and their interaction in food applications. Develop materials to communicate structure and function of carbohydrate ingredients both internally and externally. Utilize advanced scientific techniques (e.g., x-ray diffraction, DSC, imaging) to elucidate molecular interactions and functionality of carbohydrates and complex systems. Mentor younger scientists in the group to develop their scientific and career aspirations and provide guidance in our matrix environment. Ensure safe working practice in research labs, pilot plants, and manufacturing facilities to meet or exceed safety goals. Skills and Proficiencies PhD degree or master's within food science, grains science, or similar education. 5
years of experience in the food industry. Starch formulation experience and understanding of starch food ingredient functionality is required. Large industry experience including experience in starch products, customer facing experience with professional maturity. Solid understanding of food system development and innovation with experience in texture and methods used to characterize food systems. Knowledge in starch processing technology. Experimental design knowledge and an ability to communicate verbally and written, with highly technical to non-technical customers. Ability to travel up to 25%.
Salary Range:
$80K -- $100K
Minimum Qualification
