Intermediate Disability Underwriter - Accident & Sickness

Location: Anywhere in Canada

Empire life is looking to hire an Intermediate Disability Underwriter to join our Group Solutions team!

The Intermediate Disability Underwriter provides risk assessment and administrative services to support new business processing. Additionally, the Intermediate Disability Underwriter is responsible for developing and utilizing business improvement and data analytics tools to guide decision-making, identify actionable insights and facilitate the implementation of opportunities to improve profitability and monitor risk management. The incumbent is guided by defined procedural constraints and works under the close supervision of the Manager, Disability Benefits (Accident & Sickness).

What you’ll be working on
• Provides risk assessments and related support to Empire Life, Accident and Sickness benefits including the ability to determine exclusions, counter-offers or policy amendments.
• Ensures effective decision-making and communications by team members by providing consistent and strong leadership
• Act as primary contact for advisors & partners during the application, assessment and policy issue process.
• Communicate information to clients, advisors and third parties regarding underwriting evidence and decisions
• Inputs data on internal administration systems
• Support the department by providing administrative services
• Receive ownership of applications prior to issue; prepare and distribute communication to advisors; update underwriting administration system accurately and efficiently ensuring coverage changes are entered in a timely manner and reflected accurately
• Investigate and work with multiple vendors and appropriate experts regarding fee approvals to determine solutions to ensure effective cost management of doctor reports, medical exams and lab tests
• Respond to inquiries and requests and provides solutions and recommendations
• Collaborate with management to improve reporting and ensure reliability, validity and integrity of the data used in
• management reporting and analysis
• Act as a training/functional resource for team members
• Maintain expert knowledge of underwriting manuals, regulations, reference guides and underwriting policy,
• practice and procedure
• Continually review and improve internal business processes on an on-going basis; implement operational changes as required and maintain appropriate documented procedures.
• Participate in a variety of projects & initiatives (system changes and testing, vendor surveys, department and Corporate projects)

What we’re looking for you to have
• 2+ years work experience in accident & sickness disability-related field
• Extensive knowledge of individual disability underwriting principles and practices
• Ability to prioritize and balance multiple tasks and attention to detail/accuracy
• Customer focus, service orientation
• Well-developed written/verbal communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to work independently and as a collaborative team member
• Adaptability
• Highly developed Ability to think logically, analyze and/or solve problems
