About the Organisation
The Office of Public Prosecutions (OPP) is Victoria’s largest criminal legal practice and the independent statutory authority, responsible for preparing and conducting criminal prosecutions for serious offences on behalf of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). Matters prosecuted by the DPP, and the OPP involve serious crimes or matters that are of significance to the fair and effective operation of the Victorian criminal justice system.
The objective of the OPP is to ensure prosecutions in Victoria are independent, fair and efficient delivering the best justice outcomes for the community whilst appropriately considering the needs of victims of crime. With approximately 500 staff members, including legal and corporate support, the OPP strives to deliver justice through its unique legal expertise and digital capabilities, managing 4,500 – 6,000 cases per year with an 89% guilty outcome.
About the Role
This role will report to the Director, Policy and... Specialised Legal and will work directly with the Solicitor for Public Prosecutions (SPP), DPP, Chief Crown Prosecutor and other key members of the OPP. In this role you will be the key media point of contact, responsible for all media enquiries, monitoring media landscapes, providing strategic external communications advice, and ensuring compliance with legal requirements in media engagement.
Your role will be responsible for:
• Managing all proactive and reactive media, acting as the media point of contact 24/7. This includes responding to routine media queries and developing high quality media releases, articles and other external facing content for appropriate audiences.
• Developing effective media and engagement strategies to identify opportunities and minimise risks to the OPP. Providing strategic communications advice to the SPP, DPP and relevant internal stakeholders in relation to media.
• Supporting the OPP Legal Practice by reviewing and developing guidance for OPP staff on media issues, and assisting with the development and delivery of training on media issues, as required.
• Monitoring and addressing breaches of suppression orders, prohibitions on publication, potential contempts and other legal issues related to cases prosecuted by the DPP.
• Depending on capacity and experience, take on other legal work performed by the OPP.

Requirements
To be considered for this role, ideally you will have experience in journalism or media within a relevant sector, as well as a legal background.
• The ideal candidate will come from a legal background as a solicitor.
• Experience in both criminal and media law, including with contempt laws and publication prohibitions will be highly regarded.
• Experience proactively developing and delivering on media engagement strategies will be highly regarded.
• Background in journalism, PR or communications with a strong understanding of media relations will be highly regarded.

• Are a strategic thinker with an understanding of how to best respond to critical media queries.
• Appreciate legal constraints on the publication of information relating to criminal cases and are capable of crafting high quality content in line with those constraints.
• Handle confidential and sensitive information appropriately.
• Possess strong stakeholder engagement experience, with the ability to advise and manage relationships effectively in high pressure environments.

Qualifications
• Tertiary qualifications in law, media, or communications desirable.
• Admission to the legal profession as an Australian Lawyer highly desirable.
