About The National Screening Service

The National Screening Service (NSS) was established by the Minister for Health and Children in January 2007. BreastCheck is part of the NSS which also encompasses;
• CervicalCheck – The National Cervical Screening Programme
• BowelScreen – The National Bowel Screening Programme
• Diabetic RetinaScreen – The National Diabetic Retinal Screening Programme.

In April 2023 we launched National Screening Service Strategic Plan 2023-2027 setting out the direction for the service over the next five years.

‘To work together to save lives and improve people’s health’ is the central message of the NSS Strategic Plan 2023-2027.

Our Service - BreastCheck (The National Breast Screening Programme)

BreastCheck – The National Breast Screening Programme - plays a central role in thediagnosis and management of breast cancer in Ireland, providing free mammograms to women aged 50-69 every two years. Breast cancer remains the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women... in Ireland with over 2,700 women diagnosed each year. Survival has improved as a result of screening, symptomatic detection and improved treatment options.

Locum Consultant Histopathologist

The screening programme is a consultant-delivered service. Assessment clinics take place at the Merrion Unit and surgery is carried out at St. Vincent’s University Hospital. All specimens are processed and reported in the department of histopathology at St. Vincent’s University Hospital, which is fully equipped with histodissection, automated immunohistochemistry and an in situ hybridization service (further information on SVUH histopathology department below).

St. Vincent's University Hospital is a major academic teaching hospital that provides a front-line emergency service and national and regional medical care at in-patient and out-patient level. St. Vincent's University Hospital provides in excess of forty medical specialities. The hospital has 476 in-patient beds, incorporating 7-day, 5-day and day care options. St Vincent's University Hospital is a health promoting hospital. Education and research are major components of the philosophy of St. Vincent's University Hospital. Facilities are provided for the academic and clinical training of medical students, nurses, laboratory technicians, research scientists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, radiographers, medical social workers, dieticians and speech therapists.

The department of histopathology at St. Vincent’s University Hospital offers specialized diagnostic services, including automated immunohistochemistry and molecular techniques, in surgical pathology and cytopathology with emphasis on breast pathology including breast screening, gastrointestinal pathology, hepatic and pancreatic pathology (including transplant), genito-urinary pathology, dermatopathology, endocrine pathology, cardio-thoracic pathology, soft tissue pathology, and non-gynae cytopathology. The department provides pathology services to St. Vincent’s HealthCare Group including the National Cancer Control Programme, the National Breast Screening Programme, the National Liver Transplant Centre and the National Pancreatic Centre. The department also provides a diagnostic service to General Practitioners in the area and has a large referral practice.

The Benefits

We offer very competitive salaries, on the new 2023 consultant contract, on a scale of €217,325 – €261,051 per annum, depending on experience. Continuous professional development is extremely important to us, and we provide up to €12,000 per annum to support your CPD. A generous annual leave allowance of 30 days applies, additional to 10 public holiday days allowing time for family life, hobbies, discovery of Ireland and beyond.

For those relocating, generous relocation support may also apply, to cover certain travel and accommodation costs.
