This is an exciting opportunity to be a hands-on trustee, helping to promote kindness and prevent animal cruelty. The Board of Trustees of the RSPCA East London and Havering Branch is looking for a new Trustee who will become the Treasurer.

This is a vital role, helping ensure we can continue to help the cats in our area. As a trustee, you will have a real opportunity to offer your experience and skill set to help us progress. The role of Treasurer is very important to us - not only do we need someone to keep us on track financially and keep us viable, we are also looking for someone who can help us change so that we can help more animals in need. You will also meet and work with people who share the passion in animals. You can use your skills and experience and make a real difference to both the animals we... care for and the families that adopt them.
What are we looking for?
In terms of skills and experience, we are looking for someone who has Appropriate professional financial qualification; Knowledge of bookkeeping and financial management; Good financial analysis skills; Ability to communicate clearly in order to provide clarity to the Board about financial matters; An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship; and A willingness to devote the necessary time and effort. A knowledge of charity / CIO reporting requirements and practices would be helpful, but is not essential, as you will have support from two prior Treasurers of the branch. Ideally, the new Treasurer and Trustee will live, work and / or have a good understanding of the local communities we support (postcodes starting with E or RM) but all candidates will be considered. You must be committed to the RSPCA’s charitable objectives, having a passion for animals is essential. We are looking for someone who is prepared to join a hands-on team, a positive team player who has experience of or are part of the groups and local communities we would like to build stronger relationships with (e.g., East London and Havering area, local business communities in the area). We welcome someone who can bring new ideas, different experience and fresh perspectives to the Committee. You will need to be able to work with people and have good interpersonal skills. You do not need to be an expert although commitment, common sense and the ability to be objective are vital. Experience and knowledge in animal welfare topics preferred but not essential. Please also note that to become a trustee, You must be aged 18 or over. You need to provide references. You need to be a member of our branch for three months before you are eligible to be elected. Practical considerations Trustees are elected for a 12 month term each year. Trustees would normally be expected to attend a monthly committee meeting lasting about 3 hours. Reasonable expenses will be reimbursed. Trustees must sign a Trustee Declaration of Willingness to Act to clarify that they are not disqualified from being a trustee and that they accept the post. Trustees need to complete the new declaration from the Charity Commission and read their guidance for individuals on who can’t be a trustee or senior manager of a charity.
What will you be doing?
We are looking for a new Trustee who will become the Treasurer in compliance with the Charitable Incorporated Organisation requirements. RESPONSIBILITIES AS A TRUSTEE To be familiar with and support the aims and policies of the RSPCA and the Branch rules To work with other trustees and Branch officers and act in making decisions for the best interest of the Branch and the RSPCA To lead or/and be involved in different areas of the operations To ensure the Branch meets all the minimum animal welfare standards. To participate in Branch committee meetings and attend its annual general meeting. RESPONSIBILITIES AS A TREASURER Keeps proper accounts and report on financial matters Review the CIO’s financial performance, oversee the financial risk management and advise on its financial viability Ensure the CIO has robust and effective financial controls in place Manage the production of an annual budget, and any necessary financial reports/returns, accounts and audits Pay invoices and act as a signatory of the bank and investment accounts Draft and review the charity’s financial and investment policies Lead on appointing an independent examiner when required Liaise with our external accountants, the bank and any other parties involved in financial matters
