Job Summary

The Analytical Science department is part of the SABIC global Corporate Technology and Innovation (T&I) organization, with multiple global locations. The analytical science organization in North America provides extensive analytical expertise in the area of advanced chromatography, spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and microscopy to support T&I programs across Strategic Business Units, delivering innovative solutions for the circular economy, in automotive, healthcare, building and construction, electronics and other markets.

We are currently looking for an enthusiastic, creative and highly skilled analytical professional with broad knowledge in instrumental analysis. You will use your expertise to be part of this exciting adventure acting as a liaison between the Analytical Science team and SABIC R&D. As a member of the Analytical Science team in Mt Vernon, your main objective is to operate state-of-the-art NMR equipment. You are also expected to run routine hands on analytical tests in gas chromatography, liquid chromatography, GPC, ion chromatography and mass spectrometry. The role will also focus on executing and coordinating analytical tests within the analytical team, across multi-functional teams, and with external collaborators to provide effective analytical support to product development and process optimization.

This job is located in Mt Vernon, IN, USA.

How You Can Be the Impact
• Prepare samples for liquid NMR analysis by using various sampling methods.
• Apply advanced NMR analysis techniques including 1D, 2D as well as low field NMR to evaluate the molecular structure, chemical composition of complex polymeric systems or small molecule additives.
• Design and execute both novel and routine experiments using chromatography techniques, provide in-depth data interpretation, communicate results and solutions to internal and external stakeholders, present and publish when appropriate. Translate the knowledge and cross-train colleagues as required.
• Participate in regional and global T&I Accolade projects as team member in materials or application development through providing analytical solutions and testing methods for molecular component/structure characterization, additive analysis and contaminants analysis in complex polymeric systems or chemicals.
• Document technical finding and new knowledge in forms of technical report, patent application and technical presentation and share with local and global teams with compliance to company knowledge management policy.
• Develop and provide chemical characterization and problem solving expertise to support product development programs as well as addressing customer and manufacturing issue resolution needs.
• Collaborate effectively with other analytical experts at other regional R&D laboratories in order to help elevate SABIC’s global expertise.
• Complete workload as assigned within project timelines. Operate, troubleshoot and oversee maintenance of analytical instruments. Maintain inventory of supplies and consumables. Ensure reliability and continuity of service. Document methods and processes in accordance with EHS (Environment, health and safety) policies including SOPs (Standard Operation Procedure) and MOCs (Management of Change).

What Matters to SABIC
• BS or MSc with 3+ years’ working experience, or fresh PhD in the field of analytical chemistry. A degree in general chemistry, chemical engineering, physics, bioscience and materials science will also be considered.
• Broad knowledge of analytical techniques in the areas of NMR, gas chromatography, liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry, especially for the characterization of petrochemical products and polymers.
• Ability to work independently on multiple projects with high enthusiasm and drive.
• Hands-on mindset with flexibility, creativity and independence.
• Knowledge of basic statistical data analysis.
• Excellent English spoken and written language skills.
