What You Will Do

Come join the world's most innovative R&D facility, helping us tackle tomorrow's large-scale science and national security challenges. The Information Sciences Group (CCS-3) at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking senior technical experts in the field of Artificial Intelligence to join our vibrant and multidisciplinary research team in developing AI for Science. The... successful applicant will be an established leader in the AI or Machine Learning research communities, with a reputation for innovation and leadership. Our mission is to develop and deliver novel AI algorithms, including foundation models, for extreme-scale scientific challenges.

CCS-3 invites candidates with an exemplary track record of establishing and leading successful research programs in the AI or ML disciplines to apply. The successful candidate is expected to be a self-starter, and will be responsible for working with group management to develop new research directions and establish new research programs.

This position will be filled at either the Scientist 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Scientist 3 ($122,300 - $206,300)

The successful candidate will oversee and participate in research activities to develop AI techniques, such as foundation models, for a variety of projects related to scientific discovery and national security. Responsibilities will include leading R&D activities/projects related to developing AI-enabled extreme-scale physics simulations, molecular dynamics, self-driving laboratory experiments, predictive science for user facilities, surrogate modeling, or uncertainty quantification. Other responsibilities include writing research proposals and meeting with program sponsors on a regular basis, steering research activities appropriately to ensure success, and building teams to pursue applied R&D efforts.

Scientist 4 ($146,800 - $254,700)

In addition to the responsibilities outlined at the lower level, at this level the successful candidate will be responsible for establishing new programs and funding sources in support of broad machine-learning activities for the group and laboratory.
