What You Will Do
Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has an immediate opening for a technically excellent and highly motivated Instrumentation and Controls Technician for high power systems driving some of the world's strongest magnets. The work is a mixture of installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of high-voltage, high-current electrical systems and large electrical energy... storage systems. Major infrastructure includes the LANL 1430 MVA generator, capacitor banks, high power converters, bus work among subsystems, and control systems that orchestrate the whole operation. Voltages up to 24 kV, converters current up to 20 kA, and stored electrical energy up to 630 MJ occur at different stages in our facility, therefore a major component of this job is ensuring safe operations for everyone involved. Excellent quality and attention to detail in this work is essential to ensure scientific success and safe operation of experiments to avoid high consequence failures. The selected candidates will support scientific users of our facility from around the world in a dynamic team environment where communication, teamwork, initiative, and follow through are essential.

Research Technician 4 ($69,500 - $110,300)
Key responsibilities include:
• Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electrical control systems, electrical power delivery, energy storage systems and control circuits and instrumentation.
• Work directly in coordination with our Systems Controls Specialist to develop and implement new and existing control strategies per best practices and standards.
• Execute complex installation and maintenance tasks including control panel design and fabrication.
• Identify, track, and report maintenance and repairs; and maintain inventory of controls and electrical operating equipment and spares. Work independently from single-line diagrams to run cables and make wire terminations of complex electrical and control circuits.
• Design and install printed circuit boards, various circuits and components, instrumentation, and controls (I&C) systems, and programable logic controller (PLC) systems.
• Be responsible for executing maintenance plan for a facility subsystem; report on progress.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
• Demonstrated experience with hands-on technical work, for example, electrical equipment installation or repair, wiring, calibration of equipment, electronics, computer networks.
• Experience troubleshooting Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and Human Machine Interface (HMI) and performing at a minimum minor adjustments and changes.
• Experience designing schematics, implementing and troubleshooting relay logic.
• Experience in metering and testing equipment (for example, multimeters, megohmmeters ("IR"), and oscilloscope).
• Ability to accurately document technical work to support systematic facility record keeping.
• Ability to respond to inquiries, investigate, and resolve operational issues and coordinates work with cross-functional teams.
• Ability to plan and prepare work scope from verbal and written instructions and specifications.

Required Education and/or Experience: Position requires an Associate's Degree and 5 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:
• Demonstrated experience in safe electrical practice through knowledge of any of the following, (1) an applicable standard (NEC, NFPA 70B, NFPA 70E, ISO), (2) a broad scope institutional electrical safety program (e.g., that of U.S. National Laboratory like LANL or a similar organization).
• Experience with Schneider Electric's Modicon PLCs including but not limited to M580/M340, Quantum, and Premium series.
• Experience in any edition of AVEVA's InTouch Wonderware SCADA platform.
• Familiarity and knowledge of varying industrial protocols such as ModbusPlus, Modbus TCP/IP, and Modbus RTU.
• Experience with installation and commissioning of electrical and instrumentation facility systems, for example, electrical generation and distribution, capacitor banks, motors, and control systems.
• Perform Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) Programming.
• Experience with routine preventive maintenance with minimal down time to the operation and highest safety standards, including reporting all incidents and discrepancies.
• Demonstrated experience troubleshooting and diagnosing problems with complex systems and ability to propose creative solutions.
• Ability and inclination to contribute to a wide range of programs as needs and opportunities evolve with time.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
