Software Engineer QA L2

The Software Engineer QA role will involve working alongside Developers, Software Architects, other QA team members and Senior Software Engineers under the supervision of the QA Lead to shape and implement the customer and product deliverables that will drive us forward in our strategic initiatives.

The Software Engineer QA should be able to own tickets from a QA perspective, attend 3 amigos sessions independently from their QA Lead raising issues, risks and gaps in requirements. They should be self-assured to be able to break requirements into scenarios without support and write test cases – both manual and automation with minimal support.

The Feature teams look to deliver in an effective and efficient manner with the Software Engineer QA reviewing requirements to identify scenarios, agreeing automation scope and completing test activities both manual and automation in order to ensure the team deliver a quality product.

In this role we are looking for a Software Engineer QA with strong automation knowledge working ideally within a framework with integrations to third party software.

Key Responsibilities
• Active participation to the success of a self-organising agile team through proactive contribution on 3 amigos, identifying the automation scope, eliciting, authoring and executing test cases
• Demonstrates strong attention to detail and ensures high quality delivery of own tasks
• Can identify which level of testing an automation scenario should be created within - component, app group or integration testing
• Promotes Continuous Integration and High Quality / Fast Feedback Principals
• Appreciates internal and external stakeholder perspective and the need to present alternative solutions.
• Ability to consistently deliver within agreed timescales whilst ensuring appropriate coverage of testing is adhered to
• Good internal and cross team communication skills - both written and verbal.
• Proactively seeks out ways of sharing information with peers.
• Liaises with internal stakeholders and other OpenBet departments in relation to their current work.
• Builds effective working relationships with key members of the department.
• Some direct exposure to internal and external stakeholders, third parties or other OpenBet departments.
• Provides feedback to team and line manager on QA process and QA technical improvement opportunities
• Adheres to Continuous Integration and High Quality / Fast Feedback Principals
• Able to break up QA scenarios of medium complexity into discreet elements/test cases."
• Appreciates the importance of clear communication with operational management, including giving accurate progress reports, identifying risks and escalating problems early.
• Capable of liaison with other OpenBet teams to coordinate delivery of small scale pieces of work.
• Has good understanding of Agile Principals and ensure that work is being delivered with these Principals in mind.
• May be involved in shadowing technical interviews for new recruitment
• Increased task ownership, autonomy & effective time management skills
• Good task planning skills and proven ability to support the execution of Test Plans for large scale projects within the committed deadlines.
• Able to mentor Junior QA team members
• Ability to analyse requirements of medium or higher complexity and identify test scenarios that achieve the maximum coverage levels
• Ability to transform test scenarios of medium to high complexity into test cases, with minimum support and amendment after review
• Ability to identify the automation scope for the assigned tasks / features
• Ability to work independently on automating test cases, executing test cases and retesting defects with all the above entities being of moderate complexity.
• Ability to do peer review for scenarios and automation test cases of moderate complexity
• Competent at identifying defects whilst testing and raising them accurately and clearly with full details including basic/simple log information (with support from more senior members of staff)
• Ability to tackle automation test case creation of high complexity given access to appropriate senior technical staff for review and support.
• Ability to use OpenBet toolset for simple technical tasks eg. API requests, log retrieval etc.
• Ability to perform simple db queries to validate testing output
• Ability to analyse feature updates/new features and identify areas for regression testing
• Ability to provide accurate estimates for testing activities for individual tasks
• Competent at gathering and documenting testing requirements and producing a test estimate for a small to medium, multi-day piece of work.
• Working knowledge of a number of the languages, tools and technical processes required to undertake automated test creation work at OpenBet.
• Ability to configure the automation framework on their own environment to be able to run tests locally, debug and fix issues
• Ability to write relevant component, app group and integration automated tests to allow continuous integration of project.
• Ability to collate basic metrics - defects raised, priorities, numbers of test cases executed passed/failed etc to report to other team members and line manager
• Monitor continuous integration pipelines, debug test failures, escalate defects and resolve automation issues in a timely fashion. May require support from IC3 and above.

Required experience:

Knowledge & Experience:
• Experience of using test tools both enterprise and open source.
• A Technical background – BSc or equivalent in IT/Engineering/Scientific or related discipline and professional experience of minimum of four years in IT.
• Demonstrable ability to define and construct automated test cases to a high level (e.g. using Gherkin / Cucumber, Selenium, QTP or Postman etc.).
• Good interpersonal skills to communicate at all levels.
• Thorough knowledge of structured test methods and procedures.
• Proven experience of testing complex user interfaces.
• Strong communication and presentation skills.
• A commitment to quality and a thorough, detailed approach to work.
• Experience with various development methodologies; Agile, TDD or Waterfall.
• 5+ years’ experience in QA of which at least 2 years’ experience working with test automation tools
• Should be opinionated, especially about quality.

It would also be great to see these skills/experiences as well:
• Experience of working on highly complex, distributed systems.
• Experience with Java, Gherkin/Cucumber, Selenium
• Experience with JIRA and TestRail
• Some experience developing test cases for software developed using Akka, Kafka, Scala and Cassandra.
• API Testing with Postman
• A working understanding of Docker, Ansible, Maven, Jenkins, and Git (BitBucket).
• Understanding of Behaviour/Test Driven Development.
• Experience working with version control systems.
• Qualified to ISEB/ISTQB Foundation level.
