SUMMARY:

The City of Childress has a population of 5,800, located in and the County seat of Childress County Texas. We are located in the Panhandle approximately 120 miles from Amarillo and 150 miles from Lubbock. Chief of Police is responsible for operation and administration of Police Department, which currently includes 12 fulltime and 4 part time Officers and 1 administrative clerk as well as an SRO Program. Responsibilities also include public safety, prevention of crime, and enforcement of local, state and federal laws. Under direction of the City Manager, the Chief of Police plans, organizes, coordinates, and directs the City’s comprehensive police services and law enforcement program including patrol, traffic control, law enforcement, traffic law enforcement, accident investigation, crime prevention and criminal investigation duties. Police Chief fosters cooperative working relationships with citizens groups and outside agencies and departments and provides complex administrative support to the Office of The City Manager.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Duties may include but not limited to:
• · Professionally represent the City in law enforcement matters and other areas of responsibility
• · Managers the affairs of the Police Department and personnel, including hiring, disciplining, rewarding, promoting/demoting and terminating Police Officers.
• · Plans, organizes, coordinates, and directs through appropriate Police personnel, all City police functions.
• · Develops, directs, and reports on implementation of goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and work standards for the department.
• · Develops operating budget for the department.
• · Works closely with the City Manager, City Secretary, Municipal Court Clerk, and a variety of public and private organizations and citizens groups.
• · Prepare and recommend long-range plans for the department and Police services.
• · Provides staff development and training opportunities.
• · Directs the development of Police Department management systems, procedures and standards for program evaluation.
• · Monitors developments related to Police service matters.
• · Prepare and deliver public reports and presentations for City Council.
• · Establishes and maintains a working environment conducive to professional standards, positive morale, quality and teamwork.
• · Prepares a variety of written, statistical, and financial reports.
• · Assist in forecasting of budget needs
