Position Summary
The managing editor is responsible for managing Rice Architecture's publications program-both printed and digital-serving as the primary point of contact for all school publications and editorial needs, including Rice Design Alliance, the school's community engagement arm. The scope of work includes, but is not limited to school prospectuses, handbooks, program brochures... posters, Cite magazine, and the Architecture at Rice book series. Working collaboratively with the school's faculty, staff, publication committees and the entire communications team-as well as external editors, designers, and printers-the managing editor develops and implements publication strategies that promote Rice Architecture's academic excellence and public reach, broadening the global awareness of its programs, research, and creative practice. Rice Architecture is a top-ranked school in one of the most diverse cities in the United States. Both the Architecture at Rice series and Cite Magazine have a long and established history of thoughtful content, which ranges from cutting-edge faculty research and creative practice to urban, social and civic-minded articles and commentaries.

The salary for this position is $55,000-68,000, commensurate with experience.
Highly qualified applicants outside of the Houston area will be considered for hybrid/remote work.

Essential Functions
• Makes decisions on proposed changes and amendments to communications or publications
• Supervises the distribution of the publications
• Ensures that information included in publications follows policies and procedures
• Maintains high-level interactions with specialized constituents to promote departmental goals, visions, and strategies
• Applies advanced knowledge to determine the approach necessary to achieve department objectives
• Manages editorial and production processes that are complex in nature and reach across organizational levels
• Performs all other duties as assigned

Additional Functions
• Actively engages in, cultivates, and researches design strategies to promote Rice Architecture's programs, events, and other projects
• Develops and directs Architecture at Rice's publication plan and branding strategy across a range of media channels to promote and advance Rice Architecture's scholarship and public image
• Engages with the school's faculty and programs to develop content for publication.
• Manages the work of writers, editors, designers, and researchers in order to meet editorial direction and oversees the print and digital production process for all publications
• Adequately plans and schedules content review and feedback sessions to meet publication deadlines
• Supervises the distribution and archiving of publications
• Builds and fosters relationships with designers, printers, and publishers

Minimum Requirements
• Bachelor's Degree
• 5 years experience working with architectural or academic publications and managing complex editorial projects

Preferred Education
• A degree in architecture, art history, communications, English, journalism, or a related field; masters or Ph.D. degree preferred.

Required Skills
• Demonstrated ability to oversee all aspects of editorial and publication process
• Demonstrated advanced editorial and public relations skills and the ability to synthesize material from multiple sources
• Demonstrated ability to determine publication and editorial approaches
• Extensive experience managing and coordinating complex editorial and publication projects
• Expert-level knowledge of job-required tools and applications
• Demonstrated ability to apply discretion and judgment in evaluating implications of information release to internal and external audiences
• Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite
