Compensation: $37/hour

USAT is a young startup developing cutting-edge satellite communication technologies based on a novel lens antenna. We've received the National Science Foundation (NSF) Phase I award in 2021 and the NSF Phase II award in September 2023 to develop the full prototype of the STELLA (Satcom Technology of Elaborate Luneburg Lens Antenna). Through our technology, we provide reliable and dependable satellite communications for air, sea, and land transportations, support education, healthcare, emergency and natural disaster situations, search & rescue communications, as well as offer a cost-effective communication alternative for businesses.

• Of only ~4% of National Science Foundation (NSF) Phase I awardees, USAT was granted the highly selective NSF Phase II award and funding in 2023. The startup received their initial Phase I award in 2020.
• Dr. Gbele’s antenna technology has been selected twice by the US Army’s Expeditionary xTechSearch (2018, 2019) for its breakthrough innovation. He was awarded the highly competitive Department of Defense US Army Small Business Innovation Research program grant in 2019 for another technology, to engage in federal R&D that has the potential for commercialization.

Join us as our founding Mechanical Engineer! In this role, you will provide mechanical design to support electronics circuits, antenna products, manufacturing, packaging for electromagnetic microwave devices, testing, and regulatory processes.

We’re building strong partnerships with select companies to conduct R&D in additive manufacturing for our satcom products. You’ll interface with these businesses as well as contribute to our partnership efforts to push the boundaries of our R&D in additive manufacturing. This will include state-of the-art 3D techniques in:
• Powder bed fusion using laser powder bed fusion or electron beam powder bed fusion
• Direct energy deposition that utilizes energy source (laser, arc or electron beam) to add material
• Binder jetting that utilizes ink-jet print head to form layers that attract the material powder particles to bind into them (formed layers)
• Sheet lamination utilizes ultrasonic vibration to bind together laminated sheets
• Material extrusion utilizes thermoplastic or filament to form parts
• Material jetting technique adds material in thin layer depositions that are cured through UV light or other methods
• Vat photopolymerization that uses liquid resin deposited layer by layer and cured using UV light or other curing methods.

As we are all-hands-on-deck in this early phase, you may also help our team identify new funding opportunities and produce technical reports or proposals to help us secure funding. We’re looking for someone who will thrive in a nimble startup environment, is energized by our mission, and is excited to work at the forefront of emerging technology.

Key responsibilities:
• Lead projects or processes of diverse scope with autonomy and accountability
• Interface with additive manufacturing providers
• Coach and actively contribute to R&D to develop new products
• Drive continuous technical improvement of our products
• Design, simulate, test, and fabricate mechanical support for microwave devices including antennas, microstrips, and other microwave components
• Lead manufacturing and production activities
• Lead regulatory efforts to obtain product certifications

Desired experience:
• Education & Fieldwork: BS in Mechanical Engineering or 2-5 years of relevant field experience
• Experience with CAD design, 3D rapid prototyping printing, and expertise in at least one programming language such as Matlab script, Python, or other
• Experience assembling small mechanical parts and testing the integrity of mechanical assembly
• Expertise with CAD software such as Solidworks, AutoCad, etc., Matlab from Mathworks, ADS from Keysight, Labview from NI – National instrument


USAT was founded by Dr. Patrick Gbele (bio), who helped develop the Luneberg lens while earning his doctorate in computer and electrical engineering from the University of Arizona.
