Tewksbury Hospital, part of Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), is seeking a dynamic and dedicated Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) to play an essential role in delivering psychiatric services, emphasizing psychopharmacology, to medical inpatients. As a vital member of our healthcare community, you will conduct psychiatric consultations and urgent diagnostic evaluations for medical patients with diverse needs, including those with co-occurring mental illness, addiction disorders, developmental disabilities, traumatic brain injury, and special needs populations. Your responsibilities extend to providing psychopharmacologic evaluations and ongoing consultative management, collaborating on treatment plans, and ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.

Your impact goes beyond clinical duties as you engage in interdisciplinary teams, facilitate leadership activities, and foster integrated behavioral health and medical care for our patients. Collaboration is key as you consult with legal personnel, attend meetings and conferences, and maintain communication with attending physicians and healthcare providers. Upholding the highest standards, you integrate current psychopharmacology literature into practice and ensure accurate patient records while participating in routine education regarding policy and regulatory processes. This position works 40 hours per week, with Saturday and Sunday off.

Employees in this position will be required to work mandatory overtime.

Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):
• Perform psychiatric evaluations and urgent diagnostic assessments for medical inpatients, including those with co-occurring mental illness, addiction disorders, and developmental disabilities.
• Formulate and communicate psychopharmacologic treatment plans in collaboration with requesting physicians.
• Prescribe or recommend medications to improve patients' psychosocial and vocational functioning, promoting integration into the community.
• Assess patients' capacity for informed consent regarding prescribed medications and collaborate with staff to take appropriate actions when necessary.
• Seek collaborative consultation with hospital psychiatrists for challenging cases and complicated treatment scenarios.
• Facilitate comprehensive treatment by collaborating with interdisciplinary teams and coordinating multiple behavioral health and medical services.
• Respond to psychiatric emergencies on medical services and manage inpatients manifesting assaultive/abusive behaviors.
• Provide evaluations for disability and guardianship proceedings in compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
• Maintain accurate patient records and integrate current psychopharmacology literature and research into clinical practice.
• Engage in professional development through attendance at staff meetings, lectures, seminars, and additional forums to stay informed about behavioral health treatments and exchange information with colleagues.

Required Qualifications
• Knowledge of the theories, principles, and practices of psychiatry.
• Understanding of diagnostic and treatment methods and techniques used in the field of behavioral health and psychopharmacology clinical practice.
• Knowledge of the types and characteristics of drugs used in providing behavioral health care.
• Ability to exercise a broad range of clinical interviewing techniques.
• Knowledge of the factors, trends and problems in providing behavioral health services to under-served, complex, culturally diverse medical inpatients.
• Ability to establish rapport with persons from varied ethnic, cultural and/or economic backgrounds.
• Ability to effectively interact with people who are under physical and/or emotional stress.

Qualifications

Minimum Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic, or medical facility, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions

I. A Graduate degree with a major in Nursing may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience.*
• Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

Special Requirements

Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing. Current and valid authorization to practice as a Nurse Practitioner by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
