Covid-19 Denials Catches on with Republicans
News

Democrats and Republicans may bicker on whether the coronavirus is under control or whether more testing is the problem. One thing they both agree on is that the virus does not discriminate along party lines.

With more than 3.2 million Americans testing positive for the virus and over 134,000 deaths, the numbers speak for themselves.

President Trump has often accused Democrats of amplifying the seriousness of the coronavirus outbreak for cheap political gains.

Trump and multiple Republican Governors, members of congress and the conservative media started out in February by denying there was any problem.

Even as the World Health Organization declared covid-19 a global pandemic in March, Trump compared it to the “regular flu”. A comparison many Republicans supported at the time.

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is one of the most infectious diseases that the world has ever known. It has killed close to 600000 people globally in just 7 months.

According to new reports, almost eight-in-ten Democrats and Democratic leaners (78%) openly say that the Coronavirus pandemic is a major threat to the health of the U.S. citizens.

A smaller proportion or share of Republicans and GOP leaners (52%) say the same.

Likewise, Democrats are more likely to say that the Coronavirus represents a major threat to the U.S. economy, their personal finances, and wealth.

From March 19-24, Republicans expressed more confidence than Democrats that medical centers and hospitals could handle the needs of everyone who is ill during the Coronavirus period.

Fast forward now, covid-19 is raging on in the South of the country that is predominantly controlled by Republicans who condemned shutdown measures as too intrusive on their civil liberties and destructive to the economy

States like Georgia where the Governor had pushed for early reopening now have worrisome spikes in covid-19 cases from hospitalizations to deaths. The state now has daily new cases of more than 4000.

In Texas, Gov. Gregg Abbott who rushed to reopen his state has renewed a disaster declaration first issued in March to limit the spread of the virus.

Remember Ted Cruz, the Republican Senator from Texas who invited Elon Musk to move his car manufacturing plant from California to Texas after California denied Elon Musk’s company an early reopening in May?

In fact, Elon Musk defied lockdown orders and went on to reopen his plant with great support from the conservative media and Republican leaders. California that had implemented some of the most stringent lockdown measures is now seeing daily record spikes.

Even as Florida experiences record breaking infection rates, Gov. Ron DeSantis has pushed forward with reopening plans. Insisting that, a new shutdown is not an option.

One of Florida’s biggest tourist attractions Disney World just opened its Magic Kingdom Park near Orlando to the general public for the first time since the shutdown.

A total of more than 7000 people are currently hospitalized in Florida with record breaking daily new cases of more than 11000.

As the coronavirus wrecks havoc on the US economy, weekly jobless claims are also at record highs. A total of more than 40 million Americans are out of work because of the pandemic.

These high numbers of unemployment and record deficits, have created a very difficult balancing act for both Democratic and Republican controlled areas.

In New York for example and many other states controlled by Democrats, the spread of the virus has been significantly brought down to manageable levels.

These states are now slowly moving to reopen their economies and encouraging everyone to stop the spread and help save more lives by just wearing a mask.
