The main purpose of the job is to expand the library presence into the faculty teaching, learning, research and innovation through the provision of library services and collections, and also manage the operation of the branch library. Key performance areas of the job include:
User Services Manage the user service process, ensuring that all service points are adequately resource
Collection Development Fill the gaps Identified in the collection to ensure relevance to faculty programmes and research niche areas Perform collection weeding were necessary following the collection development policy Carry out stock control measures in line... with needs, including security and stock control actions (including stock-taking) Organize shelve reading projects Monitor arrival of resources from Acquisitions and Periodicals and follow-up if problematic
Training and Orientation Manage the roll out of information literacy programme in the faculty Coordinate the orientation of new staff and students into the library
Research Support Manage the provision of research support services to the faculty post graduate students, researchers, and post-doctoral fellows Support the faculty research focus areas, research niche areas and research entities
Human Resource Management Participate in staff recruitment and selection process where appropriate Set up orientation/mentoring programs for newly appointed library staff are set up and facilitate attendance and thereafter provide probation reports probation reports and final appointments of new staff correctly following HR procedures Manage staff development and performance Leave planning: ensuring adequate staffing through the year/holidays Do help ensure continuous service at points by checking rosters for evening and Saturday shifts
Space and Facilities management Provide a conducive space for studying, collaborative work and innovation Conform to institutional PGP's to ensure maintenance of facility is carried out effectively Manage the branch library asset register
Health and safety Facilitate the identification of health safety and security risk Manage all security risks in the branch Ensure that the branch library is cleaning and conducive for use by the students and staff
Strong leadership and management, good liaison with faculty and students, dedicated support for the academic programmes, and research to staff and students, all within the context of working in a team of Librarians across different campuses will be required. This position requires the Librarian to work on Saturdays and after-hours shifts as required. The incumbent will need to be flexible and adapt to the constant changes that Librarians face within the workplace and that may occur within CPUT. Job Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Minimum Requirements: Senior Certificate or equivalent. 4 year degree in library and information science or equivalent. 3 years relevant experience in a Higher Education Library environment or research environment. Valid driver's licence. Saturday and after-hours shift work as required. Work at different CPUT campuses as required.
Recommendations: 3 years' experience in managing and supervising branch operations and facility management. Experience in a Higher Education Library environment and/or in a special library environment focusing on provision of information, training, collection development and research support to staff and students. Advanced qualifications in LIS. A paid-up member of LIASA.
