Editor Los Angeles
The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures furthers the understanding, celebration, and preservation of cinema through inclusive and accessible exhibitions, screenings, programs, and collections. Welcoming visitors from Los Angeles and around the world, the Museum works in active partnership with motion picture artists and specialists, scholars, staff, and diverse communities to contextualize and challenge dominant narratives around cinema, inspiring discourse, connection, joy, and discovery.
Reporting to the Director of Publications, the Editor provides in-house editorial services and helps produce catalogs, museum labels, and other materials related to the Academy Museums exhibitions, collections, archives, and public programs. You will work independently on tasks of varying magnitude and scope, meeting agreed-upon deadlines and maintaining exacting editorial standards.
You Will:
Provide substantive editing, copy editing, fact-checking, and proofreading for a range of materials... including exhibition catalogues, collection books, didactic texts, museum labels, and gallery and programming guides.
Track projects through all stages of editing, design, and production, ensuring drafts and proofs are reviewed and approved by all necessary departments and partners.
Prepare style sheets and contribute to the development of biographies, chronologies, bibliographies, image captions, and photo or loan credits, front and back matter, and marketing materials.
Source images for reproduction, coordinating image procurement and permissions processes and tracking relevant paperwork.
Conduct research in libraries, archives, and collections databases.
Coordinate the production, shipping, and storage of publications.
Be a second reader for primary editors on other projects.
Work independently and meet deadlines.
You Have:
5+ years of experience editing a range of texts for museums or nonprofit cultural institutions.
MA/MFA desired.
Understanding of the principles of editing, including knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style (17th edition).
An exceptional eye for detail and accuracy.
Excellent writing and editing skills, with the proven ability to work collaboratively with diverse writers.
Effectiveness in managing complex editorial projects and collaborations with curators, graphic designers, photo researchers, and museum colleagues at all levels.
Familiarity with the craft, technology, industry, history, and art of filmmaking.
