Consultancy - Business Plan Development Nairobi
This assignment is intended to support the completion of business cases in the pipeline. This process will include support in scoping (expression of interest), screening (application), co-creation (business plan narrative and accompanying financials). Although a number of possibly eligible SMEs and cooperatives have been identified by the CRAFT team and are willing integrate climate smart practices to improve their sourcing and processing models, this assignment will explore additional enterprises willing to partner with CRAFT. CRAFT operates a climate smart innovation and investment fund (CIIF) to support the implementation of prepared developed business plans. CIIF provides grants on a matching fund format to eligible SMEs, service providers and cooperatives to facilitate the integration of climate smart practices in the target value chains. The eligible SME’s must meet a minimum criteria set out the fund’s guidelines as qualification prerequisites.
SME’s and cooperatives operating... inthe potato, sorghum, green grams and or common beans value chainsface climate risks related to access to low volumes and poor quality of grains, limiting their ability to seize market opportunities typical of resilient agribusinesses. Similarly, systemic and business inefficiencies make these business vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Production and marketing inefficiencies make it difficult for actors along the target value chain to recognise and adapt climate smart agriculture practices, exploit economies of scale and optimise their production. Consequently, the businesses and the farmers they serve use obsolete agricultural practices and technologies, poor input use, inefficient market support infrastructure, and have limited access to finance. Additional challenges include weak farmer institutional structures and insufficient working capital / cash flows to make investments necessary for business growth.
The business plan development process will allow SME’s and cooperatives to recognise challenges unique to their strategic and business models, and formulate fundable initiatives to exploit market opportunities. Ideally, the fundable initiatives should incorporate the specific needs of women and youth. These opportunities will then be funded though CIIF.
