About the Position
ALS is seeking a casual Laboratory Assistant for our metallurgical services business in Burnie, Tasmania. Successful applicants will become part of its busy mineral testing laboratory that strives to exceed customer expectations by delivering quality results on time, and by maintaining strong relationships with its clients.
This is not a FIFO mine site position.
The Laboratory Assistant will be required to undertake sample preparation and laboratory testwork duties in a safe and timely manner under the direction of Supervisory staff.
Typical duties include:
Perform sample handling & inventories
Perform sample preparation, including crushing, blending and batch grinding procedures according to ALS Standard Operating Procedures
Handling and operation of various laboratory equipment
General laboring and housekeeping duties
Conduct various bench scale and pilot plant testwork under the direction of supervisory staff
Assisting in other duties as required
This is a physically demanding position that require applicants to be physically fit, have access to reliable transportation and be able to work day or afternoon shift as required.
Applicants with previous experience in similar laboratory or mine site roles will be highly regarded, however, training will be provided for successful applicants with no experience.

Essential Skills, Experience and Knowledge:
Good numerical, communication, organisational and time management skills
Be detail orientated, highly motivated and able to work autonomously
Moderate level of computer literacy
Demonstrated judgement, creativity, integrity and ability to problem solve
Ability to work as part of a team with a high regard for safety
Moderate level of fitness and ability to work shift work if required
Reliable transport and/or access to public transport
First Aid is desirable
Forklift Licence advantageous
